The Maryland “Spay and Neuter” license plate, featuring a Chesapeake Bay Retriever and a cat, provides funding for local animal shelters to help control the pet population through spay and neuter pro-grams. Since the plates have become available, 1,143 have been sold.
The license plate costs $50, of which $25 is tax deductible. A plate can be obtained by mailing a $25 check to any Maryland Shelter registered with the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (see local list below). The organization will then return a signed application to you, which you then mail to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration with the remaining $25 of the $50 fee. MVA will send the ordered license plate by mail. You will need to return your current plates to the MVA when you receive your “animal friendly” plates.
These license plates cannot be personalized and your application will not be processed if you have out-standing traffic fines. Purchase of the spay/neuter plates does not alter your registration renewal date.
