Having one of the amazing staff waiting outside to take your pup in the morning helps the early commute!

Experienced staff and customer service is great! And having a retail store to pick up food and toys makes life easier.

by Sheridan M. via yelp
My dog Macy has been coming here since they were Dogs by Day and Night on 14th. The hourly daycare option is fantastic for when I have dinner plans or just want to run errands. Also, you cannot find better hours at any of the other area daycares. The staff is courteous and professional. Macy can be a handful, but they know her quirks and are great with her. I always recommend Planet Pet to my friends and they've also been happy and well taken care of just like my girl.

The only place where my little Bowie seems to be happy and comfortable- Planet Pet. What I love about Planet Pet:

-Familiar, enthusiastic staff who seem to love Bowie as much as I do. Especially Tim, he's so good to my little guy.

- Spacious and clean facility.

- Competitive packages and the convenient location.

No complaints here! I love Planet Pet!

I used to take my dog here all the time but recently they raised their prices from 4$/hour to 5$/hour- that's a 25% increase! I can no longer justify sending my dog there all day-- plus, Canine divine picks up your dogs and takes them to a farm in MD where they can run around in a field all day for $30! It's hard to justify 50$-60$ a day on a regular basis.

by haley s. via yelp
As a new dog owner, I have been checking yelp regularly for reviews on dog parks, stores, and daycare. I brought my dog in for socialization- the staff was so friendly and accommodating. I had a meeting and they kept her for extra time, and told me not to rush. She came back exhausted and happy- which makes me happy. I think the $5/hour cost is reasonable considering the dogs are supervised and there is a minimum of 2 hours- so you aren't locked into a full day of daycare. Maybe I am used to DC prices- but a few hours in daycare is the same price as a dog walker in this city!
I used Mr. Howard for the first time- to transport my dog to and from daycare- and he was a pleasure to work with. He called and texted me to let me know "my baby" was doing fine in the car. That call followed up by another Planet Pet staffer calling to confirm the dog was at daycare safely put my mind at ease.
I highly recommend the facility if you are looking for attentive and responsive staff to take care of you baby!

Had a gift certificate here thanks to the basket I won at the Sugar & Champagne Affair, so I went to buy my dogs some treats.

The retail area is somewhat small, but clean.  The two sales associates were friendly and offered help if needed.  They have a good amount of dog food and toys, but I wish they had more snacks to choose from...there's pretty much just one rack.  I ended up grabbing a few treats and two tug of war squeaky toys for my dogs.  I bought two because the nice sales associate said for the next ten minutes, they were buy one get one free.  So, why not?!

Park along the street (meters) or in a garage (when I went on a Sunday afternoon, parking in the garage was $13...no way! not sure if they have some type of validation, though).  Be careful though, if you make a right on Champlain street, your only option is to make an immediate right into the garage; otherwise, it turns into a one way street.

My dog loves Plant Pet.   She goes once a week for doggie daycare and also has boarded there overnight.  The staff is friendly and helpful.  They all know my dog by name.  In the mornings, Planet Pet often has a staff member waiting outside to take your dog inside.  This is a great help because parking in that area can some times be a problem.  My dog says five woofs for Plant Pet.

by Joshua C. via yelp
Big fan of the day care and boarding services. The staff is great and it couldn't be more convenient.

I take my dog once every few weeks to get some exercise during the work day. They offer curb side service where you can literally drop your dog off without leaving your car. You can bring your own food or pay to have them feed your dog up to three times throughout the day. It's not expensive, only a few dollars.

The best part, though, is the layout of the place. It's just one big open room where all the dogs run free. There are cots for them to crash on, but what I like is that there is no cage time whatsoever. Samson comes home tired as all hell after a day at PP.

Overnight boarding is $48, which is reasonable for DC. This is the best place in town for this sort of thing.

Went up to DC this past weekend...
by Julia A. via yelp
Went up to DC this past weekend for a day trip to do the tourist thing and visit with a good friend and her family.

We decided to bring Dante with us, instead of boarding him all weekend here in VA.  I went on Yelp and based on the reviews decided that daycare would be the better and money saving route for us.

We dropped Dante off at 9 and enjoyed our day in DC and picked him up at 6 to make the 3 hour drive home.

I always make sure to ask the daycare facility how he fared. He made it through with flying colors and I am so thankful I found this place.

We will definitely be using Planet Pet if we are ever in the DC area again. They did a great job and I am so ridiculously impressed with their hours. I have never seen any daycare open till 11 PM. That seriously is the BEST IDEA EVER. That's what gave them the 5 stars. Typically I'd probably give 4 but the hours really can't be beat.

He didn't smell bad afterwards and wasn't dirty, either. That was a total bonus.

I am a big fan of Planet Pet daycare...
by Ash R. via yelp
I am a big fan of Planet Pet daycare and boarding.  My dog, a 90 pound german shepherd, loves it.  I usually take him there once or twice a week for a few hours, and have also boarded him there when i am out of town many times over the last 3 years.  Some of my trips were short weekend trips, others lasted 2-3 weeks.  I feel confident that they take very good care of him there.  One time years ago when i picked him up, he had a small scratch on his nose - i guess he got it from rough play.  They pointed it out and gave me a written description of what happened and when - it was very professionally handled, and obviously they keep an eye on the dogs and regularly check to make they are alright.

My dog loves that place and as soon as we park and get out of the car.  he practically drags me up the street till we get to the front door.  This is quite comical, because normally he is a ridiculously well behaved dog that barely pulls when we walk.  I did a lot of online research when selecting a daycare/ boarding facility, and these guys seem to consistently have great reviews, and i can see why.  I love the flexibility of the day care option (i.e. can drop off without appt, open till 11 pm),  love that its a leash-free environment (its excellent for doggie socialization and partying), and that the rates are very reasonable.   The staff seem to genuinely care about the dogs and know their names, and are always very nice and professional.  This is a well run establishment.

This review is for doggy-day care only.

My dog, Nora, is very reserved and approaches new situations cautiously.  As we are selling our home, we need to get her out with varying advanced notice.  Planet Pet is has great hours and makes my dog feel welcomed.  She's always excited when we return and does not hesitate to go with any staff member.  I can tell she's comfortable there, which makes me feel good as a dog-owner.  The space is clean and staff are nice.  The rates are competitive for the area, too.

I have yet to purchase from the store or board my dog here, but anticipate doing so in the future.

Planet Pet is a decent neighborhood...
by Shanna E. via yelp
Planet Pet is a decent neighborhood daycare. It is located in a warehouse type setting and with a small ourdoor space. I am guessing the outdoor space is 8x10 because I have no idea what the actual space is like since they do not allow owners in the back (red flag).

My very energetic Westie Georgie is so very social...we've been visiting PP for over a year now and Georgie seems to love everyone there..so spacious, clean and love that they open the outdoor space on nice days.

The handlers, you can tell adore the dogs in their care and I always feel comfortable knowing that Georgie is well looked after...best part is he is so exercised out that all he wants to do is cuddle with me while I relax at the end of my busy work day...

Planet Pet is clearly run by people...
by Craig M. via yelp
Planet Pet is clearly run by people who love dogs and know what busy dog owners need.

We are very picky about where we leave our dog (ok maybe a little obsessive). After reading all the reviews for the local dog daycare/boarding facilities in the neighborhood I went to check out  Planet Pet in person.

The building is clean without any strong pet odor (I asked they use non-toxic cleaning products in the whole place). There is a big tv in the lobby that shows the pet room where you can see some dogs playing and the handlers interacting with the dogs. I stayed and watched for maybe 10-15 minutes and was pleased with what I saw. The handlers were good at reading dog body language and preventing any play from escalating into aggression.

I asked about signing up and was given a few forms to fill out and was told there is a $30 socialization fee (the fee is waved if you are referred by a current customer). Over the counter they have 6-10 pictures of some current employees and I was happy to see that most of them have been with Planet Pet for 3-5  (sometimes 10) years. Since most people won't stick around in a job they hate that long it makes me think most employees want to be there and actually like dogs.

The socialization test was very straight forward. we bought in our dog and picked him up 3 hours later. When we picked him up they gave us a  little report card that rated his behavior in various categories  including: submissiveness, dominance, playfulness, fearfulness, aggressiveness, anxiety, disobedience. Each of these categories has a few check boxes were the employee can indicate what, if any of the traits your dog displayed. After the socialization test we were given the option of buying a package of hours at a discount. Since the socialization test our dog has been dropped off a few times and come home happy, hungry and exhausted.

All of this makes Planet Pet a very good daycare facility but what set them apart, and makes it an excellent one, is their hours and billing policy.

Planet Pet is open until 11pm  Sun-Friday and 12am on Saturday 365 days a year. This is great for busy dog owners who want to go to dinner, and a show but don't want their little buddy to be left home alone for 4-5 hours after being home while you at at work. You can take your dog to daycare after work let them run and play their heart out and pick up an exhausted happy dog on your way home. Also, if you often get stuck at work late Planet Pet will go to your house and bring your dog back to the facility ($8 fee and they'll need a key) so he isn't stuck home alone longer than you planned.

Billing is done by the hour ($5 an hour or $35 for a 9 hour day) and you can buy blocks of hours to make daycare cheaper. If your dog suffers from separation anxiety the hourly billing makes it super easy to drop off your pooch and go do some errands without worrying about him howling and annoying the whole neighborhood. They also have a loyalty card that lets you earn free goodies.

What could they do to make Planet Pet even better? A webcam feed of the playroom would be great. It would be nice to be able to watch my dog play while I'm at work or doing errands. Also a discount if you want to bring your dog in everyday while you are at work ($735 a month for dog daycare is still a lot if they could knock it down to $600 prepaid it would be nice).

We haven't had to try out the boarding services yet but if they are equal the the daycare offering I"m sure it will be great.

by Leslie P. via yelp
My dog had been going to Plant Pet for almost a year for daycare once a week and sometimes boarding.  Unfortunately their new rates are too rich for my blood so no more.

The staff is always friendly and my dog gets very excited to go there but the increase from $3 to $5 per hour is just too much.  I also found it a bit rude that they didn't even give existing clients a chance to buy hours at the old rate before they raised it (or if they did they didn't market it very well because I never saw anything.)

And I've also been waiting for the promised upgrades like the small dog room and webcam that we were told about months ago and have never materialized.  Seems odd to raise the rates before adding the amenities.

So while I still like Planet Pet my pup will not be going to daycare and only boarding as a last resort because of the fees. :-(

We brought our 5-month old puppy to Planet Pet for his first daycare experience a few weeks ago. When we picked him up, he didn't want to leave!  I like the fact that Planet Pet lets the dogs roam free in the main room and are constantly supervised. They also have a separate room for small dogs. The facilities always seem very clean and the staff is friendly. I highly recommend them if you live in the area!

This review is for day care only.

I just picked up my dog, Oliver, from his first socialization visit to Planet Pet. They seem incredibly efficient and friendly. The space is clean and spacious. I love that they offer day care by the hour for a great price (as well as a daily rate starting January 1). You can pick up and drop off anytime during their long hours and in the mornings they offer curbside drop off.

Can't wait to take him back! It's great to know that my dog is being well taken care of and getting some energy out.

Love this place!  I have been bringing my boxer here since she was 4 months old (she is now 2) for the Puppy Kindergarten classes.  Now I bring her to daycare or overnight boarding on the weekends.  My boxer is super energetic and this place is a god send for tiring her out.  The employees completely understand her energy levels and know just how to handle her.  The daycare opens early and stays open until 11pm/midnight on weekends which is really convenient when she doesn't need to actually spend the night.  Like I said, we love this place!

Our dog normally shakes and tries to take off when we take her to other daycares. Not Planet Pet. She loves coming, and after 5 hours is exhausted. And she is a pointer mix who has endless energy--but after several hours at Planet Pet she is relaxed and tired.  The people who work there seem to really love and understand dogs.  We have also boarded her there for a week or so--no problems.

Updating my review now that we've done boarding and weekday daycare:

I've boarded my dog twice at Planet Pet with no problems. Reservations went smoothly. I didn't get a report from the staff on her stay, but she seemed happy and fine.

I've been very impressed with the well-oiled machine of weekday daycare. Drop offs are super easy. There's usually someone out front to take dogs in, which eliminates traffic jams. The weekday doggie crowd seems more consistently energetic than on the weekends, and my dog came home wiped out every night. The staff I interacted with were great, friendly and generally got us in and out quickly. We only had to wait more than 5 minutes to pick up our dog once, when there were 3 of us waiting and quiet, older gentleman got confused.

After a couple of weeks of daycare, I did notice that my dog had picked up the habit of barking and vocalizing a lot more than she used to and pawing at us for attention. That's probably a disadvantage of the weekday crowd, which I imagine contains more puppies. On weekends, the older dogs check her behavior and she comes back well socialized.

Daycare is expensive, but the rates are competitive with other places we looked at. I've used Planet Pet's daycare several times in the past couple of months and have had good… Read more »

Our dog is our only son, so like any good parents, we've done quite a bit of homework looking into doggy daycare options in the DC area.  Though not the closest to our house in Petworth, we finally came to Planet Pet after unsuccessfully trying our hands at some other local options.  Our doggy, Paco, dreaded going to these other places.  With Planet Pet, we're convinced he genuinely enjoys going; that he's made good friends there; and that even if for only a few hours, his playtime is enough to exhaust him for the entire evening.  Also, unlike other places, he comes back smelling clean.  You can tell they maintain clean facilities and really check out the dogs that go there.  A+++ and highly recommended.

Great place for my pooch to spend a few hours on weekends. He loves his visits, and I love knowing he's having fun while I'm out and about running errands or hanging out with friends. I only wish they would close at midnight on Friday and Saturday nights - I often have to race the clock to get there before they shut the doors at 11 pm.

Most of the staff members are friendly and clearly like the dogs, which is a big plus. The retail options, which seem to be improving over time, are helpful when in a pinch.

Since they moved from 14th Street, the store has improved tremendously.  Not to say that it was bad or anything.  But the additional space, the more congenial neighborhood and the closeness to the residential area of its core business has done it well.

Every time I go there the staff has a smile on their faces and it is obvious they're glad to see my pup.  In several cases, they have recommended items for my dog's sensitive digestive track with excellent results.

I'm a fan of them.  Friendly, knowledgeable, eager to please.

Planet pet has been somewhat of a lifesaver for our pup Sasha who has been going for 10 months now.  They are great in the mornings when we can just drop her off curb-side with her food and they take care of the rest. They always have quite a few dogs playing there no matter the time we take her, so I know she will have a great time. Plus they always have security for the dogs in the back in case one or another get out of hand.
Only downside is the pricing, but they usually have deals so have some money here or there.
We will continue to use them as long as we live in DC

I've only visited the Planet Pet store once and fell in love with the local establishment and its staff members (dogs included). I feed my cats only Wellness canned food, so after Petco ran out (plus many fights and headaches with them), I called Planet Pet for pricing. The prices are on par with Petco (and cheaper than PetSmart). They even deliver with a flat fee of $8. I purchased over $200 worth of food and the staff was very accommodating with delivery times since I have a very busy schedule. Follow-up was great and they continuously left me voicemails to ensure my cats would get their food in time before my shelf was empty.

Our dog Layla always come home with a super huge grin on our big doggie face...and immediately dive bombs the couch and passes out. The place is great, perfect location, but a wee bit pricey (although you pay $4 per hour) so you can make it cheaper if you want.

If you need a break from your dogs or they need a break from you, this place is perfect. There are tons of togs, all socialised, so definitely helps with excess energy and manners.

It's great having the option to drop off your furry pup for a few hours.

I love how they offer discounted packages, Blurb card prizes, a monthly newsletter and a foster program.

Great selection for a small shop and very friendly staff. Everything is a bit over priced but what else can you expect for city convenience and a small business. The grooming salon is not my favorite place to get my dog groomed, but they are professional and nice and do as well a job as they can. I've heard really good things about their doggie day care and boarding though. I can't say they're the best in DC but they are a good solid choice for when you are in pinch and don't feel like driving out to the burbs. They are also a whole heck of lot better (i'm talking leaps and bounds) than that terrible Petco up in Cleveland Park. SO check them out...but keep in mind that they are a small local business.

Planet Pet has relocated.  It is not on 14th Street anymore.  It is now located on 17th and Florida NW.  The building is an old storage facility (the entrance is off to the side) in the general vicinity of Mint gym and near Harris Teeter.

I did not use the boarding or grooming services (yet).

The retail area is spacious and clean and seems to carry a wide variety of foods, treats, and accessories (toys, clothes, shampoos, etc.)  The staff were friendly and helpful, the selection was diverse and focused on quality and healthful items, and the prices are good.  Organic shampoo was $4 less than a nearby boutique and Healthy Hips treats at $4.99 were priced less than Target or other local stores.

While it is a bit hard to find (I stumbled across it going somewhere else), Planet Pet seems to be a good destination for pet lovers and bargain hunters.  I will be back and suggest you check it out too.

by Mari K. via yelp
I agree with the other reviews, the dogs luuuv being there. For dogs that are happy to be with other dogs, few things are better than hanging out in a big space in a motley pack, all day and all night. And they do come home completely tuckered out.

But ...as I discovered, their business policies are draconian, especially since their boarding costs are at the rather high end of the spectrum. If your dog gets sick and you end up opting out of a reservation you make for an overnight stay (this is not the right environment for making sure they get fed medicines etc.), they won't refund your deposit unless you cancel 3 days ahead. They won't even credit the money to a future stay. Since they also have an interest in not having a sick dog in the pack, I think this amounts to being distinctly customer-unfriendly. A good lesson in how not to treat your customers with a recession underway.

by Jessica S. via yelp
I think the best review for this place comes from the fact that I can hardly walk my dog down the block that Dogs by Day is on without getting dragged towards the door.  My pup is always thrilled to get to go to daycare and it happy and completely pooped when I bring her home.

To enroll your dog at Dogs by Day requires a 3 hour and about $30 evaluation where the staff keeps an extra close eye on how your dog interacts to make sure they can handle the experience.  Dogs by Day is cagefree so the dogs are allowed to run around and play in their large play area or nap on the doggy beds in the corner.  After that initial visit your dog is free to come and go at any time.  They offer packages of daycare hours (which get cheaper per hour the more you buy) and with the purchase of one of those packages the drop off and pick up take less than a minute.

Dogs that are checked in by 9 a.m. get to go on a walk around the neighborhood and dogs that are staying all day can be fed either with food the owner provides or with food from Dogs by Day.

The place is a mixed bag.  Our dog, Mohandas Jambon Hoover, doesn't like it when we drop him off and that isn't the case when we leave him with friends.  He's also gotten sick there and had his eye scratched after the New Year.  Fixing the cornea cost us another $300.

But I will say this: the staff is friendly and professional.  And when they see MJH in the neighborhood, they say HI.  They remember our guy by name even if he hasn't been there in months.
