disappointing experience
by The via google ago--years
my dog had an eye problem, which was misdiagnosed twice, and treated with medication that was actaully bad for teh problem that the third Friendship vet finally caught. and they had the nerve to charge us for an emergency care visit that we had to make because her eye was getting worse!

They would rather have my dog roll around in pain then put me on a payment plan to pay for a visit. Sick!

The vets at Friendship saved one of my animals who had been misdiagnosed by another vet and was near death when I got him there, and killed another of my animals with too aggressive care for his condition. You just need to cross your fingers and hope for the best. If it is a crisis and after normal business hours, they're the only game in town. They have facilities that most vets just don't have.

Not overly impressed
by A Google User via google ago--year
Our first impression of Friendship - and it was a lasting one - was the overwhelming odor of urine as you approach the front door. Another lasting impression was the $19 dispensing fee they charged when I had to purchase medication there that I honestly could not get elsewhere. Note that someone else writes that they feel they get their $80 worth for a checkup. <gulp!> The vets at this hospital might be very good and I'd consider it in an emergency but the folks at the front desk seem very cold and uncaring. This is not a hospital I'd select as my regular vet clinic.

I went to this place and found that my dog had worms as I had suspected. The doctor wrote a prescription for a new type worm medicine at a cost of $140 dollars!!! Plus there was the visit fee. I asked why this medicine cause dog worm medicine was typically $15 at a pet store. The vet said it was gentle an new and I said it was a ridiculous price. He was obviously upset and wrote a prescription for one that costs $70 dollars. I got the feeling that as a member of the vet staff he got a cut of the prescription price. This is a place for people who have so much money it does not matter or people to ignorant to know the difference. I strongly recommend that for common problems you should use another vet clinic and only use this one when it is a real emergency.

My dog 'discovered' a small pack of rat poison as we were cleaning out the kitchen in a new home. Immediately we called the vet and arrived at FAH 20 minutes later. They induced vomiting & were very compassionate in their treatment of my dog & me. Luckily there were no complications and my dog is happy & healthy. In addition to this emergency visit, both of my dogs have received their annual check ups at FAH. In all my visits the staff has been kind, helpful, and knowledgable.

We were immediately taken care of and the front desk staff were more than helpful. The vets and technicians were a whole 'nother story. On the side of care, initially I was willing to pay any price. Then I began to realize George was not being well taken care of. First of all, he was so heavily sedated that he was completely unresponsive for two whole days. The second day the vet on duty suggested we begin to think about putting him down. I was not even willing to consider that since he was still aware and just recovering. I felt it was premature and in retrospect I was right because he's alive, healthy and back to his old kitty self. Also, they allowed him to pull out his urinary catheter because he wasn't being monitored which further delayed his recovery. The vets were incredibly pushy and kept saying they wouldn't release him to me until they felt he was ready. Well, they weren't even attempting to feed him food yet or giving him litter in his cage which would've meant he was ready to go home. I didn't understand why they wouldn't let him go if he appeared fine. Especially since cats are so attached to their homes so I felt that being outpatient would've made him feel more comfortable. After four days and George still not recovering at the rate which is normal for a urinary catheter, I drove to Friendship and demanded that he be released. Again, they insisted and guilted me but I was not willing to keep him in that hellhole any longer. I drove him to SouthPaws and after an hour there I could see the difference in care. They actually cared about George and weren't just attempting to run up a tab and provide subpar care for my pet. They even pointed out that George had been anemic for days and Friendship had failed to recognize that even though they had run blood work daily. I explained to them what had happened at Friendship and the vet on duty explained where Friendship had gone wrong and extended George's hospital stay. They even prescribed a few medications he didn't need that prevented him from being able to urinate on his own! Once he was given a blood transfusion and weened off of those unnecessary meds, he was back to his old self and ready to go home after just one day at SouthPaws. What a difference! It's very clear to me that Friendship is entirely interested in money not providing quality care. Pet care is extremely expensive and I was prepared for the costs. However, after examining George I was told the total care would amount to no more than $1500. Day after day they came up with new tests that he supposedly needed. Once the balance was around $3000 I asked what the complications were and they just kept guilting me as a pet care taker which was extremely inconsiderate because I was clearly in despair. They also asked that I apply for something called CareCredit which is clearly predatory lending and should not be recommended to any of their clients. The terms of the loan are a nearly 30% APR. It's clearly to take advantage of distraught people. I'm writing this review to spare others from this terrible experience. Friendship made that week much more stressful than it needed to be through their unethical practices and negligence. If it had been up to them, George would've been put down on the second day, not alive today by the compassionate work of SouthPaws. Avoid at all costs!

Absolutely awful! Medical care is somewhat good, however staff is rude like nowhere else! We used to go there with two dogs and cat because of the location, but not anymore. We rather drive to VA. Also they keep some dogs outside and they bark all day sometimes. We live in the neighborhood and called them about it few times, nothing has been done... Barking typically starts at 8:30 and stops after 5 PM!

Friendship costs way to expensive. I called to see how much it will be to help my female dog who may have a puppy stuck in her and the lady tells me 5000-6000. They do not have payment plans. So someone is suppose to just throw down 5000 out of thin air. I asked her what I could do if I don't have that kind of money right away. She said there is nothing they can do for me. I have a dog and a newborn puppy. If my dog isn't eating the puppy can't eat. I'm so annoyed and frustrated!

They are very talented animal vets.....But why would they take advantage of a distraught teenager that brings his 4 month old puppy in that was hit by a car..the dog was dead...they asked if he wanted them to do cpr..not telling him that he was brain dead when brought in..... they come out again and said nothing is happening do you want us to continue... he says yes...any 18 year old is going to say yes they have no idea of the cost that are involved... So a thousand dollars later they worked on a dog that had no chance!!!!. its bad enough we lost something very dear to us but to be money slapped is just wrong!!!!!!!!!!!

The worst. All they want is your money. They were too lazy to take a urine sample from my dog so they took one off the floor, which ended up being contaminated. It yielded skewed results and they still charged us for it. The front desk service is horrible and they will only tell you whats wrong with your pet if you ask. If you're in the silver spring area, Go to Silver Spring Animal Hospital. Its a smaller place but for them Pets > Money.

This is perhaps the most uncaring animal hospital I have ever heard of. After spending more than $6000.00 at the hospital treating my daughter's cat, the unsympathetic vet she saw today did not have the courtesy to spend time determining the discomfort Sake was feeling 12 days after surgery. She told my daughter the visit was only scheduled for a 10 minute suture removal. The vet who performed the surgery was not on duty but could not bother to call my daughter, even though the outcome of the surgery rests on her. Not only am I furious for the lack of compassion, I resent the whole system of "big hospital" approach to veterinary care.

I'm shocked to read the negative reviews of this animal hospital. We have been bringing out cat here for years and have always been happy with the care and attention they have given. We have seen several different veterinarians (all women, BTW) and if they don't all truly love and care about animals, they're awfully good at faking it.

by Kelly Z. via yelp 2012-04-15
We had a great experience with Dr. Mara Schultz at Friendship. Our dog, Victor*, had his butt handed to him in a fight with another pooch and Dr. Schultz and the rest of the staff at Friendship Hospital were good to him and good to us. Dr. Schultz was especially sweet, patient, and very helpful in providing followup care each of the following two days**.

While Victor is a little traumatized from his injuries, he happily trotted*** into the hospital all three times and seemed happy to see the good staff, despite their having recently shaved, stuck, and stapled him. I don't know if that's a testament to them or to our dog's short memory and good nature, but we liked going there too.

I appreciated the detailed take home information and responsive, caring phone assistance. The hospital is clean and even nicely designed.

*I see the irony.
**Yeah, we're new to dog ownership, why do you ask?

by Katie R. via yelp 2012-03-23
I think you can have bad experiences with every vet and bad things are going to happen (and yes, every vet will make a mistake) but I think what makes this group special is how they do act as an emergency place. When I called my local vet when my dog ate chocolate, they told me to call poison control who wanted 150 dollars for an opinion. Friendship was happy to look at the same chart for free and tell me my dog would be fine. Another time with a stomach issue, they talked to me every day while I was nervous, but they were realistic and never told me to come in just to get my money. They were happy to walk me threw the chicken and rice diet. Bottom line - the staff is great!

by Liz S. via yelp 2012-03-17
I've only been to this place once but once was enough to extremely impress me.  My cat escaped from his carrier and ran into a very busy street.  He was hit by a bicyclist, luckily not a car, and seemed to be having some pain in his abdomen.  I took him here because it was the closest vet to where I was and I was afraid he was bleeding internally.  The staff was extremely kind and attentive.  We were seen pretty much right away.  They did a standard physical exam then an ultrasound and xrays.  Turns out he looks ok.  The doctor was very nice and very thorough.  And to be honest I expected it to cost lot more for all the tests and the emergency visit itself but all total it was about $360 including the pain medication they gave him.  If I lived in DC I would seriously consider making this place my regular vet but I live too far away in Alexandria.  I'm very thankful they do emergency visits though.

by Keila H. via yelp 2012-02-17
I had to take my dog here about a month ago for an emergency evening after it became difficult for her to walk.  I had a very enjoyable experience, considering the circumstances.

The doctor was wonderful to us.  She recommended initial steps to rest and slightly medicate my dog, but did not push for unnecessary (read: expensive) options.  I felt comfortable and trusted her to explain to me what was wrong and the best way to remedy the situation.  Despite the convenience of being available 24 hours a day, I was a little disappointed in the cost of service, especially smaller routine items (i.e. nail clipping, expressing of anal glands) that cost at least 2.5x more than my regular vet.

All in all, I recommend them for emergencies, though I can't comment on preventative/wellness care.

I have taken several days to deal...
by Mike W. via yelp 2012-02-14
I have taken several days to deal with my anger over my experience with this place, and I find that I am still in disbelief over how I was treated.

My dogs got in an altercation with each other and one ended up getting her eat nipped.  It was no more than what you'd expect from an ear ring tear.  It bled like crazy, so since dogs only have emergency's after normal hours, I took her here to get her taken care of.

First, they don't allow you to be with your pet while they deal with them...odd.  And, after 30 minutes in the waiting room I was able to sit with the vet and discuss her situation.  She (the vet) presented me with a full page proposal of the costs involved to fix a 3/8" tear to my dogs ear.  The list was longer than my grocery list.  I was presented with a low to a high cost for fixing my dogs ear.  The range was $850 to $1,200.  Really?! The list included a crazy charge of $52 to take my dogs blood pressure.  Really?!  All I want is a couple stitches and a bandage to get my dog taken care of.  I explained to the vet that I felt I was being taken advantage of, and that putting my dog to sleep to put a couple of stitches in her ear was insane.

Left with no other choice, I gave them an $850 deposit, and two hours later my terrified and heavily drugged dog was released to me.  To my surprised, the total bill came to $610 for the four stitches.  Still what I believe to be borderline extortion.

The staff is pleasant, and they did take care of my dog which warrants the second star, but if you have no other choice but to be here, at any time, expect to part with a huge pile of money.

Would I go back?  No. I have found another more reasonable emergency vet in Alexandria.  I have learned my lesson here.

I have been a client of Friendship...
by A N. via yelp 2012-02-13
I have been a client of Friendship for 30 years with 3 cats.  I have had a generally excellent experience with a few caveats, hence the 4 stars.

I've found Friendship excellent for routine checkups, hospitalization (with a caveat below), emergency care and specialist referrals.  Friendship has taken care of my cats from kittenhood to old age and, back in the '90s, saved the life of my then 14 year old cat, who ultimately lived to be 19.  I have not experienced Friendship's surgical services, but almost everything else has been a fine experience.

Caveats:
--Friendship is very expensive.  That has not bothered me in light of the convenience and the extensive array of services provided. But if you are on a budget, you might want to take this into consideration.
--Most of the vets here are interns and young doctors who move on to establish their own practices.  The revolving door of vets is not a problem for routine care or emergencies, but might become problematic for a complex issue or for an ongoing issue in which care continuity is important. If you are a continuing patient here, you might want to establish a relationship with one of the more senior vets.
--After 30+ years, I have just experienced a service lapse that has concerned me, and which I will be monitoring.  My elderly cat was hospitalized with Friendship, diagnosed, stabilized, prescribed medication and released.  The diagnosis was reasonable, so was the prescription, and my cat's condition was stabilized. So far, so good.
When my cat arrived home on a Saturday night, however, she had a continuing problem and it seemed that she was still sedated (her records indicated sedation, although a technician told us that no sedation had been given since the previous day), and/or that her prescribed meds were drugging her (an admittedly unusual side effect, but... she appeared to get worse after receiving meds as prescribed.)  I called Friendship several times on Saturday night and Sunday, and the front desk put me into voice mail with 2 separate vets. As of mid-day Monday,  I had never received a call back.  One vet was off duty (too bad the front desk didn't mention this) and the second vet... ???  On Monday (yes, I had to call again), some 40 hours after my cat's release from hospitalization, I was belatedly advised by the front desk (after I insisted that I needed to talk to a vet immediately) that Friendship had a patient care coordinator, who indeed did get a vet to call me.  The initial non-response was unacceptable and voice mail is not a good solution if there is no
call back.  The patient care coordinator did a good job, but the non-response over the prior 40 hours was inappropriate, unprofessional and potentially detrimental to my cat.  I have e-mailed Friendship suggesting that they engage an on-call vet to respond to client medical questions when the primary vet is off duty.  Granted, this episode might have been atypical.

We've only been coming here for 6 months with our puppy, but have had nothing but good experiences through all of the puppy check-ups/vaccines/neutering/etc.  The front desk staff is friendly and helpful.  We've always been seen on time and Dr. Dunlap could not be warmer when seeing our puppy.  She's gone out of her way to call and check in on him on a Sunday after a little issue and readily answers all of our questions.  All of the techs we've encountered have been equally friendly and helpful.  You will pay a pretty penny for these services- it's pricey, but so far we've been very satisfied with all of the care our puppy has received.

Five stars for service!!!!! They lose a star for price :/

I moved to DC in August with my kitty, Little Girl. LG has always been super skittish, hates men, and freaks out about the vet. She is six years old and has had....three vet visits? First health checkup, shots and deworming,....spay and claws,...allergy shots. So suffice it to say, she was not thrilled about the trip. But, she needed an update on shots and a micro chip, so on recommendation, I made the appointment.

Due to her skittish nature, LG's appointment was with Dr. Bolch. She was amazing. She was gentle, understanding and kind with the cat, answered all my questions about helping her through her new environment, and was wonderful with LG's fear. It is usually such a struggle to have kitty out and about when a stranger is in the room at all, but she let Dr. Bolch handle her in all kinds of uncomfortable ways and didn't even cry about any of the shots. I couldn't be happier with Dr. Bolch and her treatment of LG.

It was an expensive visit, and I knew it would be, but the $250 price tag hurt. But, they gave me a 10% discount for the construction going on, which was kind of awesome. They have since finished it, and from the outside in passing it looks amazing.

Plus, I guess I don't really mind the price so much when you do consider....they are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. That creates high operating costs. With the level of care and concern displayed here, I don't mind it all that much. :) especially knowing they will be there for me in an emergency at 2AM on Thanksgiving or something.

by Lauren L. via yelp 2011-12-07
Dusty Bumbles (my cat) had her first visit with FHFA tonight. She was suffering from congestion and a mild bloody nose. My appointment ran on time, the vet and staff were professional, friendly, and helpful. They faxed the record of her visit up to her "real" vet in Philly. (I'm only here for school.)

Overall, service was excellent. Prices were higher than I'd normally pay at home, but not by much. The total for the unroutine visit and meds came to $150. And I most likely would've paid around $100 up home.

I have yet to see if the diagnosis of a bacterial infection is correct, and I'll have to wait until my cat finishes her antibiotics. But the vet seemed very competent, friendly and caring. And she took the time to explain everything to me.

I really want to give them 5 stars...
by vikki a. via yelp 2011-11-03
I really want to give them 5 stars but due to the high prices I just wouldn't feel right.

So two years ago my puppy became very ill. I couldn't take her to our normal vet, CityPaws because they don't open on Wednesdays (and are the used car salesmen of vets in DC) so I go to Dupont Vet. Dupont is quick and their vets are very educated, my dog was diagnosed with parvo within the first 10 mins of being there, but not very caring. I was encouraged to put her down because her odds of survival were so low.

So we check out and head to Friendship and I don't have enough good things to say about this place. The vet was honest but optimistic about treating parvo. She told me it would cost a lot (and she was right!). They gave her lots of attention and kept me updated the whole week she was in there. Since parvo has a 50/50 chance I really feel like I owe Taco's life to all the employees there. And Iooking back 2 years later you don't even miss the money spent.

by Christina K. via yelp 2011-08-31
I have been bringing my pets to Friendship for about 3 years now.  I have had dentals done on my 2 cats and 2 small dogs,  one of my cats saw the internal medicine doctor, and I have had to come in for emergency visits a couple of times.

All of my experience with this animal hospital has been great.  I feel their prices are justified.  Having emergency, specialty, and general care in one great location is well worth it to me.

As far as animal hospitals go, their staff is very friendly and seem to really enjoy what they do.

I think it is easy to have a bad experience when you are stessed because your pet is sick and vet care is expensive, but I will definitely continue to use Friendship for my pets

FYI - They are currently doing some construction.

Ive been bringing both my dogs...
by Rachel S. via yelp 2011-08-31
Ive been bringing both my dogs to Friendship for about a year. My experience has always been good and I feel like my pets have gotten the best care.
One dog was seen as an emergency after being hit by a car. Once arriving to the hospital he was quickly examined by the urgent care vet, x-rays taken and pain meds prescribed in under an hour. He luckily escaped the accident with only a couple scratches.

My other dog has been going to Friendship since she was 8 weeks old.
She was spayed by Dr. Trexel and saw Dr. Bolch and Hughes for routine exams and vaccines. All three doctors were great and gave me a lot of information on my growing puppy. I also saw the internist Dr. McConnell for some respiratory issues my puppy was having. He explained everything thoroughly and did a rhinoscopy on her. Although the price tag was high to see a specialist his prices for an Internal Medicine appointment were the lowest in the area.

Ive taken my dogs to one other non-emergency hospital in the area and the prices for routine care were the same. I like that if I have an emergency I can go right to Friendship and all my dog's records are all ready there for the vets to have if needed.

Both dogs are happy and healthy and I will continue to take them to Frienship for any and all healthcare they need.

Took our dog in after she had hit...
by Joe K. via yelp 2011-08-22
Took our dog in after she had hit her eye and it began to swell and stay closed.  We are new to the area so I called up my vet from back home who recommended searching for an AAHA-certified hospital and getting it checked.  Friendship came up in Google and I gave them a call.

The person who answered the phone was very nice and helpful.  They let me know that they were open 24 hours and would see us whenever we could get there.  They even took my information to set up a profile so it would be faster when we arrived.

The waiting area must have recently been remodeled -- it looks very nice and has plenty of space and seating area.  There were 3-4 people at the front desk who were quick to help us check-in.  Shortly thereafter, a tech came to take back our dog and check her vitals/weight/etc.  He came up and met her and talked with us briefly before taking her back.

We only waited a few more minutes for the vet to bring us into one of their examination rooms - which also were clean and seemly recently remodeled.

At this point, our dog had won over the staff and she was a "celebrity in the back" according to the vet (Note: She had managed to whip herself in the eye with her own tail when she got excited I was home).

The vet looked at her and gave her plenty of treats -- made us feel very comfortable that they cared about her.  We were told they would stain the eye to check for scratches (exactly what our vet at home had said they would do).  Within a few more minutes, they brought her out and told us she was OK.  Gave us a prescription for some eye drops to give her.

All in all, the process took about 30 minutes and ended up costing about $200 -- right around where I would expect for an emergency visit.

I had no issues with the staff, doctors, or facility.  I understand people are picky when it comes to vets and animal hospitals, but we had a great experience at Friendship despite my fears when I checked Yelp.

Everyone likes to think that their...
by JP W. via yelp 2011-07-24
Everyone likes to think that their vet/doctor/mechanic etc is the best in the world... While it is true that Friendship Hospital For Animals has some great vets & staff, my low star rating comes from the place as a whole in totality. There is a lot of turnover in the staff that matter: the techs (indicative of questionable management?); there is a whole category of staff that exists in part to deal w/ customer interface (read money); the facilities (the parts that was allowed to be seen by the customer) ok (scared to think about the parts only staff are allowed to see); the mark-up on drugs/products sold... I understand the increased costs of doing business in DC but I do not understand the decreased quality (inconsistency) of care. Not all of the vets are top notch... its a crapshoot if you're going at a random/emergency time or on a work-in basis.

I have seen scarier practices but I have definitely seen better. Perhaps it is too big of a facility to provide the utmost, continuous quality care? I don't know... probably not as I have had better experiences at University Veterinary medical facilities. I definitely have had better experiences at smaller practices. My current vet is a mobile vet whom I know frequently consults with specialists (for no additional charge) in managing one of my dogs who has endocrine issues.

I personally would only go there in an absolute emergency (and maybe even not then since my experience at SouthPaws was much better).

The only consistent positive thing I can say about its location... which is the least important factor for choosing care for my animals in a major city full of vets.

And yes, I held off on writing this review due to my disappointment w/ Friendship Hospital For Animals. So perhaps it's gotten better? Not so sure based on more recent reviews.

by Eva G. via yelp 2011-07-09
This review is solely based on an emergency care visit today. Knowing that they have a few "best of DC" awards I am assuming they usually do better.
My dog had greenish eye discharge and my vet said I should not wait until Monday to have that looked at however they could not see me. They recommended Friendship. I call them and they said that I could come in an time, were very friendly on the phone.
The office visit was stressful for both me an my dog and neither her nor I get easily stressed out. We were there for 4 hours and at no point in time did any of the numerous admin folks ever indicate to anybody that there turn would be soon. So there were lots of anxious animals everywhere. When I finally did see a Dr. we spent about 10 min with her. She was excellent and - I actually liked her better than my current vet - she examined Luna thoroughly and diagnosed her quickly. But the admin folks were not moving folks in and out, took forever to close people out... If I can avoid it, I will not go back...

by Ashley K. via yelp 2011-07-06
On a Friday, I took my cat to his regular vet because he wouldn't stop vomiting. They ran blood work, did X-rays, and kept him for the day, but didn't find anything wrong with him. They told me that if he continued to throw up into the weekend, to take him to an animal hospital. Of course, by Saturday morning, he was still throwing up, so I took him into Friendship Animal Hospital.

The vet that I dealt with at Friendship suggested running more blood-work and X-rays as it was possible that things could have changed since the day before. She seemed to think he had some sort of obstruction blocking his digestive tract. The second set of blood-work and X-rays came back fine as well (and trust me, that crap isn't cheap, especially on emergency visits). The vet then suggested a barium feed. She explained that the possible obstruction could have been transparent or too small to see on an X-ray, but if there was a blockage somewhere, a barium feed would identify where. And trust me, the barium feed was not cheap, either. Desperate to save my cat, I forked over the money, and they did the barium feed. He passed the barium just fine. So over $1000 worth of vet bills later, he was still vomiting the next day (Sunday). I again took him to Friendship where the same vet gave him IV fluids and referred me to a cat internalist who could do an ultrasound. Of course, I couldn't get in until the following day (Monday), and I had to drive to Bowie, MD to find a doctor who was available on short notice. Friendship's vet wouldn't see me, even though I had spent a small fortune there already and my cat was clearly very sick.

I did take my cat for the ultrasound which revealed pancreatitis, and he ended up slowly getting better on his own. I understand that sometimes mysterious illnesses like this happen, but I was discouraged and financially drained by the amount of money I spent on this whole ordeal (well over $2000 in all). And the fact that after I had been there ALL weekend, they couldn't get me in that Monday to get the ultrasound there.

I did bring my cats back to Friendship a couple more times for their regular exams, but I ended up switching vets for a couple of reasons. For one, this place is expensive. Because it's a 24 hour hospital, they have a lot of overhead, and their prices (even for routine services) are through the roof. Also, at one point, I wanted to travel with my cats (who do NOT travel well), and I called Friendship to ask for a prescription for a sedative. Both my cats were current on their exams and vaccinations, but Friendship refused to help me out without me bringing the cats in for an (unnecessary) visit to prescribe the sedative. I decided to find a new regular vet after that incident.

by Karen L. via yelp 2011-05-20
I'm beginning to wonder if those emergency visits aren't a bait and switch.  Because we had established a relationship with them via an emergency visit, we returned when our pet's problem returned.  $1500 later, we were provided with 1 or 2 options about how to treat our pet's pretty common problem, but I felt as if the vet (a different doctor) wasn't that invested.  When I asked her about possible sources/treatments that I'd read about, she either wasn't aware of them or scoffed at them.

Once again, I got the sinking feeling I knew more about a health issue than the vets, yet was being treated as an idiot.  I know it must be hard to be responsible for a variety of species, and they can't know *everything* (while I have the time and resources to focus on a specific issue), but then what am I paying such exorbitant rates for?? Why does the "satisfactory" bar with veterinary care seem to be set at "my pet is alive but my… Read more »

by Kate C. via yelp 2011-04-16
I've only experienced an emergency visit, so I can't rate their routine care. From the moment I walked in the door, they took care of both my beloved cat and me. They immediately recognized she was in distress and took her straight to the back. The doctor was with me very soon after, and clearly explained what was happening, step by step. She made sure to update me very often, so I was never waiting for long. She explained all my options and didn't try to upsale me on anything. In fact she was quite honest about my cat's chances of survival.

I felt that not only was Indy in caring hands, but so was I.

Prices were reasonable.

by Emily M. via yelp 2011-01-20
After reading the very scary reviews here I was a little nervous about taking our little dog here for an emergency visit (that, thankfully, ended up being not a big deal at all!). Brought our dog here at about 8pm on a Wednesday in a bit of a freak out, concerned b/c he was pooing a ton of blood.

Dr. Nascimi took care of us, thoroughly examined our pup and gave him (what I later verified as) totally competent and correct care. She took the time to explain why everything was okay, and provided a follow up treatment plan to treat what was just a very irritated gut system. The price was actually less than I expected (about $250 instead of the $500 I had predicted for emergency care), so that was a plus.

Not going to deviate from our regular vet for normal visits, and I hope not to use the emergency service again, but I was definitely satisfied with the care that my dog received.

I recently took my dog there after...
by No W. via yelp 2010-10-13
I recently took my dog there after he was attacked by another dog, and my regular vet (Lynn Animal Hospital) was closed.  I was thoroughly disappointed in the service I received, since they overdosed my dog on tranquilizers.  My dog is a 25-pound Jack Russel Terrier, a breed which is normally somewhat hyper, but especially so after being attacked by another dog.  They took him in the back and before even discussing it with me, administered a HUGE dose of tranquilizer because he seemed agitated.  OF COURSE HE WAS AGITATED, HE WAS ATTACKED BY A PIT BULL!

Luckily, his injuries were not that serious, however, when I called my regular vet the next morning, he noted that they administered WAY too much medicine, and that was why my dog was still not his normal self.  IT TOOK 36 HOURS FOR MY DOG TO BE COGNIZANT OF HIS SURROUNDINGS after being dosed by these idiots.  They treat animals like crap, it's a mill.  There are better places to go in an emergency.

Moved to Baltimore with our two...
by Ted F. via yelp 2010-09-05
Moved to Baltimore with our two greyhounds and one cat and was referred to FHfA from our vet in Chicago (Family Pet - five stars!) as greyhounds are a bit finicky with their care. While the routine checkup we had with one dog and the cat was thorough, it took a long time to get into the exam room despite having an appointment. Expensive, too.

But the real slap in the face was today when I called to get a refill for the cat's medication and was told I needed to call our old vet in Chicago to get them to send the prescription over. Now this doesn't sound so bad, but he requires blood tests to determine if the dosage is correct... and FHfA did the blood test but claims they don't have the medication or dosage despite having his full medical records. So I have to get FHfA to send the blood test results to our old vet in Chicago to get them to re-up the prescription.

Isn't Friendship Hospital my vet now? Why haven't they taken on the task of getting his prescription information in the 3 months since his yearly checkup? Why am I having to do the footwork for a costly vet?

Talk about disservice. Not worth it. Go elsewhere.

As you probably know, animals like...
by Emily C. via yelp 2010-08-03
As you probably know, animals like to become deathly ill only in the wee hours of the night and on weekends or holidays.

I'm adding to my old review - but the score stays the same (the old one is def worth a read too). They get two stars for....existing, and for having kept my animal alive when no one else was open to do it.

I just spent yet another weekend at Friendship Hospital, because  things got bad too quickly to risk going further away to a better emergency vet.

I was there for 6 hours.

My pet was initially seen almost immediately (good, as he was nearing unconsciousness) and returned to me by a tech who said he was good to go - but that I should wait to see a vet to discuss a prescription.

About two hours later I finally was called back by the vet, who started filling out paperwork and got the cat out of the carrier before realizing she had the wrong animal (odd, since she called me back using my pet's name, which is by no means a common one). Back to the waiting room I went with barely an apology.

An hour after that I was seen by another vet, who was not at all aware of the fact that my pet had been seen by a tech already, or that I had been there for three hours, she seemed genuinely surprised.

She ended up assessing my animals' situation as far more serious than the tech had, probably correctly, and he ended up staying there in hospital overnight.   Despite that, it still took another 2 hours to get him booked in - and an hour after that to get me an invoice (despite my questions to the front desk) so that I could leave.

At no point in this experience did I get the feeling that any of the vets or techs I saw cared about my animal or about my experience there.

They offer a much needed service, an emergency vet is absolutely needed and I'm glad they exist....

But Friendship Hospital is disorganized, chaotic, and oh my god overpriced - the staff are unfriendly (maybe just inexperienced and overworked, but does that excuse it?), and I'm not convinced my animal is getting adequate care if their vets don't even know how long he's been in the building waiting for their help. Don't bring your animal here unless it is a true emergency and no one else is open (or maybe you… Read more »

My experience with my pet was fine....
by Kim R. via yelp 2010-03-22
My experience with my pet was fine.  The cost was a little pricey, but not completely outrageous like other people's experiences.  We went in as an emergency and haven't been back, so I think that seem consistent with other reviews - they are ok for ER care if no-one else is open.

I must say that the first two people I interacted with were wonderful.  However, I saw customers around me having other experiences entirely.  There was eye-rolling by the staff when a customer questioned a $25 per bottle filling fee.  She had gotten one pill that was $10, and $25 to put that pill in a bottle.

I had an experience that is long and complicated, but suffice it to say that after those first 2 people I found the customer service rude, odd and incompetent.  Management did not address my concerns and instead were defensive and equally daft.

I recommend finding another clinic for your regular and ER veterinary care.  It just isn't worth dealing with these people.  I don't Yelp angry, so after reflection and time I can say that you are rolling the dice when you walk in the FHA door.  Will you get the licensed vet?  Will you get the nice receptionist?  Will you go broke paying for one pill for your dog?

There are so many great vets around... give them your money.

I move a lot, and my two dogs have been to five different vets including three different emergency vets, and on both counts Friendship is the best around.

First, the ER. A friend of mine was watching my dog and his dog when one of them got into a large box of chocolate (his dog, as it turned out). We called the vet and let them know we were coming. When we got there a team of 8-10 people were waiting. The vets had both dogs on IVs and vomiting within minutes. People at the best ERs don't get that kind of service.

I've come here twice and have been fully satisfied with the results.

The first time I came here was shortly after I adopted my dog, who had developed a sinus infection. After stupid City Paws failed to catch it, she got worse, and I decided to take her to Friendship as emergency. I brought a variety of magazines and such to keep me occupied, as I figured I'd be spending a couple hours there. I barely touched them. I was in and out in 35 minutes! I was amazed. Dr. Covert was incredibly friendly and explained everything well. The staff was professional and courteous.

The second time I came here, my dog was having some stomach issues. I was fearing I'd have to bring her in as an emergency again, but when I called in the morning, I was told they had an appointment that afternoon. I arrived slightly late for my appointment, but was still kindly greeted and quickly seen by Dr. Marke. She was incredibly friendly and explained all of the treatment options, their possible effectiveness, and cost. She answered all of my questions, and we agreed on treatment. Thankfully, a few days later my dog was back to normal.

I'm now a loyal Friendship customer. My only issue is that it's not close to my house, so I have to commandeer a vehicle to get there. However, so far it's been worth it.

Been coming here for years and always had great service from caring customer friendly staff who love my beast almost as much as I love him.  The service just gets better with each visit.  Vets aren't cheap in general, but the prices are cheaper than I would expect for a 24 hour place in a nice neighborhood.

In my previous incarnation on Yelp, I wrote a much longer review detailing a problem I had once there.  Since that visit, when I returned with the pup, I explained my old concern to the vet of the day, and they were very accomodating to my request to keep the dog with me while they did their thing.  We also took in another stray pup for a short time over the holidays, and got her treated here before taking her home... They gave us a discount on her treatment because of the situation... and the treatment was appropriate and thorough.  They do train newbies here, but the ones I've met were great.  Also, the front desk staff is surprisingly attentive, letting you know they've seen you, and helping to carry dog food to the car.

I'll start with the good. For the most part, these guys are good for check-ups. Had two animals spayed here and those procedures went fine. Sadly, these graces are not enough to spare Friendship (what kind of definition of friendship do these guys use?!) Hospital.

Many months ago in November my dog suffered a wound to her chest (never found out how she got it). We took her to the hospital around 6PM and we were out by 7PM (she was taken in for surgery). I got a call at 5AM saying they were having problems with the operation (they left a message, I found that out around 8AM). She ended up dying.

Now, I know that the whole procedure did not take 9 hours (assuming they started at around 8PM, 7 to 8PM being preparation). Hell, if I'm not mistaken it was only supposed to take like an hour at most. Meaning that they took a VERY long time from receiving my dog to treating her, and she died because of it.

Not only that, but they had the nerve to still charge for the operation! I hate to put a price on life or something, but I cannot comprehend how they can justify charging around $400 for killing my dog. It's like paying for a hit on somebody. It's like a body shop taking your dented car, blowing it up, and then charging you for it.

This establishment should be shut down and if possible, the owners should be tried to the fullest extent of the law. Their negligence (as evidenced through this review and through many other's stories) puts them on nearly the same level as cold-blooded murderers. Avoid at all costs.

Having just gone thru a 3-month health crisis with my cat -- and being referred to a specialist at Friendship -- I have to say that I'm just NOT impressed with the quality of their care.

The front desk staff all seemed to be trainees who couldn't answer even basic questions, the actual vet staff seemed competent, but inaccessible, and the fees were astronomical -- over the course of three months I spent over $4,000 on three emergency visits, several rounds of tests, and multiple office visits.

After a particularly bad visit -- I had scheduled an appointment with the specialist and had specifically asked for some follow-up tests inorder to determine the progress of my cat's condition -- and then reminded both the scheduler AND his tech of this before hand AND when I dropped my cat off -- not only did the vet NOT do the tests, but he didn't seem to feel the need to discuss my cat's condition with me at ALL after treating her. I refused to leave until he talked to me and had to wait almost an hour before he came out. (And he wasn't in surgery -- I was told he was busy returning calls!)

So I dumped Friendship and tried South Paws in Fairfax, VA which was hardly convenient but they were very knowledgable about the condition, MUCH nicer, and much to my surprise the same procedures cost a third of what Friendship charged.

My recommendation -- go to your local vet for basic care, Friendship for Emergencies only (because it's open 24-hours,) and South Paws for Specialists.

Yes, its pricey... but I'll pay top dollar if they're taking good care of my pup. I mean, someone has to pay for their beautiful facilities, right?

I recently took my puppy Lucy to get spayed here.  I was hesitant after reading several posts here and talking to other dog owners at various parks in the District.  Everyone agreed that Friendship is a great 24-hr option for emergencies, however many looked at me funny for even considering to use them for a planned surgery.

Well, Lucy and I are living proof that Friendship rocked the hizzy.  The staff was informative, friendly, and treated Lucy with warm care -- one of the techs even offered to watch her whenever I go out of town!  Her doctor was meticulous, friendly, and gorgeous -- yes, gorgeous!  Bygones.

Needless to say, Lucy's spay went without complication and she's doing great!  I will not hesitate to use FAH again in the future... and sincerely think its worth the extra buck.  I highly recommend these folks to everyone.

Yes, their prices are high but they are one of the only places open 24 hours a day.  We used them as our regular vet and we always happy with them but they excel in emergencies.  The people on the phone are great at handling emergency phone calls and quickly instructing what to do.  The vets are very smart and truly love animals.  They are great with staying in touch.  They helped me weigh in options with my sick cat and helped me make very tough decisions and let me stay with my cat for as long as I wanted to in the exam room after he was gone.

One more point, the service they used for cremations, Heavenly Days, is superb.  The people they are so considerate and so professional.

There seems to be a mixed bag of reviews here, but I've been satisfied with the level of service I've received from Friendship. We switched over when we moved into DC and couldn't make the 30+ minute drive to our old clinic in Rockville.

Pricewise, I didn't see a huge leap in cost, so perhaps I went from one expensive clinic to another? If I have anyone to complain to it's VPI Pet Insurance, not the clinic.

We did take our pup to an internist here to take a closer look at her GI problems, and he did a great job of starting her treatment conservatively rather than jumping straight into surgeries and other more invasive treatments. We also came in armed with our pre-work (vet records from our old vet, our benefit schedule from our pet insurance.)

And the treatment seems to be working. We will definitely take our pup back here.

This is where I take my girls for everything. They are so conscientious and friendly, ha hence the name. Millie and Maggie are no fan of the vet, but they are less stressed here than they have ever been at any other vets office.

Yeah for all dugalugs!!! and pupalups!!!!

My dog has received excellent care at Friendship and I have received excellent service.  Dr. Bolch is great for regular visits. My dog was also spayed there and she came home just as happy and healthy as usual- her incision was already practically healed after less than 48 hours.

Yes, people have posted a bunch of horror stories but I'm sure you could find those kinds of stories for any animal hospital.  Since animals can't tell us about their symptoms, we can't have the same expectations that we do for human care. Sometimes vets may have to do expensive tests to rule out possibilities and sometimes they may be wrong.

by fiorella v. via yelp 2008-01-25
I would give it 5 purely because my puppy is alive at the moment. I'd give it 0 purely because the prices almost gave me a heart attack at my tender age.

Overall, I had a good experience with Friendship Animal Hospital but I do agree that the pricing is outrageous.

I'll make my experience brief:

My puppy was only 11 weeks old and started vomiting one evening. I called the hospital because it was the closest hospital and the ONLY hospital where taking a taxi in the middle of the night was an option (taking a taxi from dupont to fairfax seemed a bit too far at that time). They were very nice over the phone and suggested I monitor him and bring him in if he continued.

At 1:30 am I brought him in. The staff was nice- no complaints there. The doctor did seem incredibly young but I know that this doesn't  mean an incompetent or inexperienced physician. She said that there was the possibility of my puppy having contracted the parvo virus and it did indeed come back mildly positive. They gave me an estimation up front and the option to treat him aggressively. They treated him, returned my phone calls promptly to update me on his progress and were very nice about answering my million questions. My puppy survived and is doing well

Overall, the bill came out to $1500 for two nights/days at the hospital which is incredibly outrageous since the estimation had been for 4 days for the same amount. However, I loved my puppy too much and I would have taken out a loan just to do everything in my power to keep him alive. I'd also just taken out puppy insurance so that helped with at least $900 dollars (thank you God). Its location is more convenient than other places so unless there is another 24 hour hospital nearby I'll have to bring him there again in case of an emergency. Lets hope this doesn't happen again!

Update: I read a few reviews elsewhere under the Union Vet clinic and it seems that they charge less for surgeries than my two night stay at Friendship. However, they are not an overnight clinic and I'd still head to Friendship Hospital if ever I need help with an overnight emergency.

Anyone who is considering going...
by Stefani O. via yelp 2008-01-21
Anyone who is considering going to Friendship should read this article:

http://www.washingtonc...

They have a record with DCs veterinary board for having unlicensed veterinarians practicing there.

The owner of this hospital, Peter Glassman, testified against provisions of animal welfare bill in DC in 2007, saying he didn't think veterinarians should be liable for non-economic damages if a vet negligently kills a clients pet (that was one of the provisions of the bill -- to establish a right to damages if a vet negligently kills a pet.   Hmmmm, why do you think he would be against that?).

In his online blog, he talks about running up business revenues.  In his March 2007 blog, he talks about how veterinarians like to make an "easy buck" on the "gravy train" by marking up drugs to resell to clients.

If you want to see what priorities are driving his business, visit his blog:

http://dvm.typepad.com...

As you will see, it's focus is "revenue models" and veterinary MARKETING, not clinical care quality.

Are the vets at Friendship under pressure to sell more services and get pets in and out as fast as possible to maximize profits??

Based on his priorities as evident from his blog and his testimony at the hearing last year, it seems the guiding philosophy of this place is MARKETING, and NOT being held accountable for quality of care.

I agree with the reviewer who said go to SouthPaws instead if you need ER care.  They are in Fairfax VA, but worth the drive.

"Friendship has been quite prolific...
by angela n. via yelp 2007-12-02
"Friendship has been quite prolific in racking up complaints," CityPaper noted a couple years ago http://www.washingtonc...    Other yelp reviews aren't kind either. As for us, we spent over $300, and all we got was a dead cat :(     That said, our experience wasn't as bad as I'd expected from Friendship's reputation.

The second my husband got home late Monday evening, he knew something was wrong: Usually Bartleby would run to meet us, then flop and roll around (like Roger Federer after a good match).  But this time, our furry grey friend was nowhere to be seen.  My husband went to the next room and discovered our poor cat moaning and wailing in pain.

Friendship is the only 24-hour vet hospital in DC. My husband rushed our cat there immediately.

To Friendship's credit, they hurried Bartleby to the treatment room right away, and gave pain medicine to make him more comfortable.  Also, their vet diagnosed what was wrong very quickly: an aortic thromboembolism, and heart failure due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (a genetic condition that Bartleby's previous vet had missed).

Friendship's vet explained the situation twice: once to my husband, and again when I arrived 20 minutes later.  When asked, she forthrightly answered that the aortic thromboembolism had happened several hours before (so our poor kitty had been suffering, alone in the apartment, for quite a while). She was also compassionate but direct about his prognosis (very bad).  It was awful to hear, but this was the information we needed to make the difficult decision to euthanize him.  We spent some time in a private room saying good-bye (the staff didn't rush us), and we held him through the final procedure.  :(

Some days later, the vet sent us a nice sympathy card, calling Bartleby a "sweet kitty."

Our bill was over $300.  Hey, we didn't exactly have cat insurance.   I'd read the other yelp reviews and expected a much higher sum, to be honest.

UPDATE: I decided to take my pups...
by S S. via yelp 2007-08-17
UPDATE: I decided to take my pups to a new vet, so I needed to have my records transferred. I called 6 times over 3 days to request that they fax me the records. I never got them.
Finally I gave up and just took my dogs to Banfield (at PetSmart), where the records miraculously appeared 15 minutes after the receptionist called. (Oh--except they send one dog's records twice and forgot the other dog....But we'll save that for another day.)
I'll never go back to Friendship. Down to one measly star.
-------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- ---------

My pets are extremely important to me. I buy the expensive food and treats, I pay for grooming every once in a while, and I invest a LOT of time in making sure that they are happy.

Basically, I'm probably a lot like you.

Still, I cannot justify spending $250+ per dog every time I visit the vet! Once my Maltese was having stomach aches and related problems, so I took him in to the emergency room around midnight. I walked out  two hours later, over $300 poorer, and all they really told me was he needed to go to the bathroom. Oh, and he needed to eat boiled chicken and rice for a couple of days--they could sell me some in case I didn't want to make it. Seriously?

I've never been back for an emergency, but I have gone for shots and checkups. I expected to spend a hundred dollars, maybe two. But FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS?

When it came time to get my dogs spayed/neutered, I took them to the humane society. It cost about $250 for two animals, plus nail trimming while they were under, no lick medicine, and pain medicaiton. I paid more than that for a couple of bortadella shots at Friendship.

Friendship Animal Hospital ought to be ashamed! It's no wonder that many people don't provide proper and timely wellness care for their pets! Who can afford that? And what kind of place that really cares about pets would want to make it impossible for the average person to afford?

by James M. via yelp 2007-06-06
I took my dog, Ernesto, to FHA around 2 a.m. on a Wednesday.  Earlier in the evening he had gotten to a bag of dog food and treats I purchased for him eating more than any dog should ever eat at one time.  (this was on top of his dinner that he ate just prior to getting in the bag.)  When I came home to find the mess, he was clearly agitated--kind of like a kid who eats too much sugar--but seemed fine.  I left him in the kitchen in case he had an accident and went to bed.  I awoke to him whining and hacking like he had something caught in his throat.  He looked scared and was obviously uncomfortable.  I called Friendship and they suggested I bring him in immediately for fear he might be experiencing 'bloat" where his stomach gets twisted.

IWhen I arrived, he was taken immediately to the back and I was told to wait. About 15 minutes later, they came back to say they had x-rayed him and that he was obviously very full, but was not experiencing bloat.  They wanted to keep him overnight and produced a "pre-bill" that outlined the estimated costs of the treatment he had already received plus what it would cost to leave him. It came to just under $700. ($300 of which had aleady been spent on his care so far.)

Long story short, they called the next day to say he was doing well but tha tthey wanted to keep him one more night to be sure he had evertying out of his system and had eaten no plastic that would harm him.

I picked him up the following morning and paid a bill that was $200 less than I was expecting. was it pricey?  yes.  Did i worry for a minute about my dog?  No.

This is not a place for regular routine care.  But as an emergency hospital, it fits the bill.

by Alexis G. via yelp 2006-08-25
Dorris' review scares me, because this is where I take my two cats. We are planning to spay one of them at this facility next month, so maybe we will reconsider.

We've been here twice with the cats, and have had an experience closer to Dorris' first take on the place. It's upscale, parking is easy, and the people were friendly. They weren't rough with my cats or anything, and didn't make us pay for anything unnecessary.

We bought "The Kitten Plan," which includes all of the shots for the first couple months, including worm prevention. I've had kittens before, and I think this stuff is pretty standard. It was only a few hundred dollars, too.

If you would ask my kitten though, he would say he hates this place. For some reason, since the day he was born he has hated dogs. Just seeing one makes him red with anger. He also doesn't like when people jam things down his throat. He's the size of a pea, but was so angry when getting his shots that it took three people to hold him still. I love him.

I thought their prices were reasonable, but veterinary care is expensive, especially in emergency situations. They also provide regular veterinary care, and have a large staff of interns and residents supervised by experienced vets.
