Immaculate, open 24 hours, staff hot and coldFriendship is a tip-top operation -- almost. Its fairly new building near the Tenleytown metro station is sleek, clean and modern. It's organized. An online service reminds you when your pet needs to come in for a check up or vaccinations.…
People seem to agree that if you...People seem to agree that if you need emergency care then you might just have to put up with Friendship -- their incompetence and sky-high prices. But I think you'll get an even MORE inexperienced vet when you must take your pet there during emergency hours.
An inexperienced vet named Dr. Nicola Moore, for starters, is a poor communicator. She was indirect in explaining about my cat and then she claimed to the hospital administrator Karen Mara that I had declined to have my cat admitted to the hospital, as though I had gone against her medical advice, which I did not.
Ms. Mara seems to have had a LOT of experience handling complaints .. they must get plenty! After my cat died Dr. Moore passed along the hard questions to Administrator Mara. I asked
1) what went wrong during the anesthesia?
2) why wasn't my cat given fluids?
3) why did they release my cat at 3 AM. and then claim that she should have been admitted for overnight?
4) why did Dr. Moore lie to Karen Mara about the facts?
5) why did Dr. Moore simultaneously claim that she was worried about "Mama," yet release her that night?
6) how could Dr. Moore claim that I was trying to save money when I agreed up front to a $500 estimate and CLEARLY was there to have everything done that could be done to save Mama's life?
7) why did Dr. Moore keep calling my female cat "he" and "him" ?
8) why was Mama's temperature normal if she had an infection?
Mama was a tough kitty who had survived all the dangers of an outdoor life, until she went to Friendship Animal Hospital. Less than 8 hours after coming home she was dead.
In closing, I will borrow from another reviewer: "will never take another animal back to this establishment. I know that animals die, I've had plenty of pets in my life, but I never felt SO screwed around with as I did here. I hope this review helps others to steer clear...find a vet you can trust."
Deep down I knew that we were coming...Deep down I knew that we were coming to the end of our time together. I called and described the symptoms to the receptionist and was recommended to bring Bailey in. With a glint of hope, we traveled across town for their after hours services. From the first person that saw us coming in the door, to the doctor, and the helpful staff, each one was immensely kind and understanding. I appreciate the honesty, efficiency, and patience from the doctor. As sad and emotional as the evening was to be, the staff did everything right. I wish I had met them sooner - they would have been my regular vet.
My dog had an injury and needed...My dog had an injury and needed to see a doctor when my vet was not available. I called Friendship and asked about the cost of an emergency visit- $149. What I was not told was that I would pay another $140 for a doctor to examine her! I felt quite misled, on the basis of my call. I was grateful they were available at odd hours and willing to see my dog, but I won't go back.
We had a great experience with...We had a great experience with Dr. Mara Schultz at Friendship. Our dog, Victor*, had his butt handed to him in a fight with another pooch and Dr. Schultz and the rest of the staff at Friendship Hospital were good to him and good to us. Dr. Schultz was especially sweet, patient, and very helpful in providing followup care each of the following two days**.
While Victor is a little traumatized from his injuries, he happily trotted*** into the hospital all three times and seemed happy to see the good staff, despite their having recently shaved, stuck, and stapled him. I don't know if that's a testament to them or to our dog's short memory and good nature, but we liked going there too.
I appreciated the detailed take home information and responsive, caring phone assistance. The hospital is clean and even nicely designed. (Qualification: I design hospitals for a living.)
*I see the irony.
**Yeah, we're new to dog ownership, why do you ask?
***He's part bull terrier, bull terriers trot like ponies
Be warned: This place does not...Be warned: This place does not care about your pet but only wants your money. They charge awfully high fees and most of the vets are young, insensitive and inexperienced.
My kitten died the day after I visited them with all my litter and spent $454. When I called them, they didn't even feel sorry and said that if I came again they would charge me again $150 per kitten in my litter before they do anything. Also be aware that if you come in an emergency, you will pay more and wait after all the scheduled appointments. They made me wait 3 hours in the middle of the night. I have now found a REAL veterinarian who is experienced and saved my remaining 3 kittens and charges less than half what this place charges.
This place is only about marketing and should be avoided if you really care for your pet and don't want to lose a fortune for nothing.
Accidents have a funny way of happening...Accidents have a funny way of happening right after regular work hours....
My chihuahua ate 2 grapes, and seemed to be okay, but after reading the potential effects (i.e. kidney failure), I gave a call to Friendship for some advice and was told to bring him in ASAP.
He was tended to very promptly (induced vomiting) as I could see everything through the glass door, but somehow the ball did get dropped on relaying the results back to me. Dr. Moore apologized for the communication breakdown, and was great at explaining everything to me. I even received a follow up phone call the next day.
The cost was about $150 for the emergency visit + $50 for the meds/service, which is roughly I think what other urgent/emergency pet centers charge. (I've only been to 1 other one.)
Excellent from beginning to end....Excellent from beginning to end. Took my roommate's Pomeranian in because he was limping. The doctor called my roommate to explain in detail what had to be done. There was a rather long wait though, and I had an appointment.
There is one basic concern about...There is one basic concern about Friendship Hospital for Animals: ethical standards. It is not that they will harm your pet in any way, simply they are out to get money even if it means unnecessary tests and procedures. We brought our rescue dog for an emergency visit. He had been diagnosed and tested with heartworm and chronic kidney disease. These are conditions that would require to put your pet down sooner or later. We had all the blood work the vet had done right after we rescued him with his notes and the medication he was taking. He had all the symptoms of heartworm (tired, extremely thin, etc.). Still the vet recommended $1,000 to repeat the same tests we had conducted. We declined and took our dog to another vet who indicated that there was no need to repeat the tests. The prognosis for our dog is clearly not good, but the second vet was at least honest. Make your own judgement.
As I feared, my impetus to join...As I feared, my impetus to join Yelp is to write a bad review. Friendship's only draw must be the fact that is open 24/7. So, if you are in DC with a late night pet emergency, then you will more than likely end up here. Just know that the staff should be able to save your pet from immediate danger, but plan a trip to your regular vet ASAP.
I took my dog in post-late night dog attack/gouging. They cleaned and closed the deep laceration and sent me home with pain medication and antibiotics. I needed to schedule an appointment with my vet to remove the stitches in 10-14 days. This cost me $440. However, three days later a huge abscess formed next to the sutured wound, so I called my vet and scheduled an appointment for the next day. The abscess burst overnight (leaving a pussy mess everywhere). My vet said that dog bites, unless treated immediately, should have a drain put in to prevent such an abscess from forming. This means, Friendship should have put one in the night of the attack/initial surgery. My dog had to endure a second surgery to remove excess skin, flush the wound, and install a drain. This cost me an additional $600. She recovered swiftly after bacteria started draining from the bite wound. My vet also put her on a better, broader-spectrum antibiotic because the one Friendship prescribed was as sorry as the overall care.
My cat stopped eating, took her...My cat stopped eating, took her to Friendship where they did all sorts of expensive procedures including keeping her overnight to find out she had eaten a string and part of it was caught under her tongue. At this point (after spending $1,200) they told me that surgery was really the only option at $4,000 to $5,000!!!! I said that was not an option for us and asked if they could try and cut the string so that perhaps it would do down and pass through. They indicated that this had a very slim chance of success at which point they indicated that I should consider putting her down.
Well, I brought her home quite upset thinking that I would try and get her to eat but would put her down instead of letting her starve to death. So, sure enough, I was able to get her eating and she passed the string in her stool the next day.
I'm so pissed off and will never return. Their first response is always some kind of surgery or expensive procedure, I'm convinced because all the vets are young and IMHO they treat it like a research hospital. To think that they recommended a $4,000 surgery when all it took was getting food in her so that the string would move through.
I had to take my dog here about...I had to take my dog here about a month ago for an emergency evening after it became difficult for her to walk. I had a very enjoyable experience, considering the circumstances.
The doctor was wonderful to us. She recommended initial steps to rest and slightly medicate my dog, but did not push for unnecessary (read: expensive) options. I felt comfortable and trusted her to explain to me what was wrong and the best way to remedy the situation. Despite the convenience of being available 24 hours a day, I was a little disappointed in the cost of service, especially smaller routine items (i.e. nail clipping, expressing of anal glands) that cost at least 2.5x more than my regular vet.
All in all, I recommend them for emergencies, though I can't comment on preventative/wellness care.
We took our dog to Friendship when...We took our dog to Friendship when our general vet referred us to the orthopedic specialist due to knee issues. The doctor who saw lab mix seemed friendly and knowledgeable and spent about 20-30 minutes with us discussing the knee issue (tears in her ACL) and our surgery options. He told us that she would need both knees operated on and that we would need to do them one at a time; most likely at least 4 weeks apart. We were then presented with a fee structure where we would pay one rate for just the surgery and then a higher rate for the surgery which would include all follow up visits; the catch was that you had to leave a credit card to confirm that all inclusive price within 48 hours of the consultation. Obviously, this leaves clients pressured to elect surgery asap and almost no time to get a second opinion. My husband and I did not elect surgery right away and decided to get a second opinion per the advice from our primary vet. As we were waiting to get an appointment with another orthopedic doctor, the doc from Friendship called my husband and started to pressure him to bring our dog in for the surgery. The doctor even told us that he could operate on both knees at the same time and that we would pay a lower price if we chose to operate on both at one time; this concerned me greatly as he had told us in person that he did not advise to do both at once because the recovery would be more difficult. My husband and I started to feel like this hospital just wanted our money and were not concerned for the welfare of our pet. Please do not feel pressured and get a second opinion!
I had to rush my cat to this hospital...I had to rush my cat to this hospital late one Friday night, for what turned out to be a urinary blockage. This is the only emergency vet clinic in DC. Yes, they were expensive (I paid $1800 to get my cat's wee wee unblocked by a catheter, 2 nights of hospital stay, 2 kidney tests, and an x-ray), but it seems par for the course.
I actually feel bad for vets; there seems to be a lot of spoiled people in DC who expect emergency vet care to be cheap. Like the person who complained about paying $149 fee for after hours emergency care, the person who complained about spending $300 only to end up with a dead cat, or the person who spent $400 for an unsuccessful surgery for his dog.
While I realize that people are not their best when their pets are suffering or maybe their emotions are clouding their judgment; I wanna smack some of these people. Seriously Mr, you begrudge a vet clinic a $400 charge for an unsuccessful operation?? Sorry, but that's not how health care works.. They tried their best, they put in the effort, they used up services and materials to care for your dog, but it just wasn't successful. Unless there's a clear case of negligence or incompetence, why in the heck would you think you shouldn't pay for the service you asked for??
While I also think cheap vet care would be nice, I know that the reality is that it can't. Health care is messed up in this country (google Time's "Bitter Pill" article); emergency health care is particularly expensive. and just like any people's hospital, vet clinics have to spend a lot of money for some of their fancy equipment and/or medication (but thank gawd it's not exactly as expensive). And lastly, vets are medical professionals who studied just as hard as people doctors, and who deserve to be paid the going rate for a medical professional..
With that being said, I think these guys were pretty awesome. They took care of my cat, they were very sympathetic, and I got regular phone updates. And unlike a normal people doctor, I was able to call a few times a day and get the vet on duty on the phone to talk to me about my cat's progress. The place was also very clean. All in all, I feel that the money I spent was well worth it.
On my cat's last day, I inquired about getting him up to date on his shots, and they pretty much said.. "well we'll be happy to set up an appointmet, as it wouldn't be a good idea to get your cat up to date on his shots at this time. The little fellow shouldn't be stressed any more than he is. Bring him back when he's healthy." So I think this is contrary to some people's claims that this place only cares about racking up fees.
As an owner of two Great Danes,...As an owner of two Great Danes, I am accustomed to spending more for everything from food to health care. Love and big hugs--priceless!
I live in SE and use DC MetroVet (wonderful "come-to-you" service!) and through Dr. Warford, I was recommended to Friendship Hospital for care of my male Dane, Tiberius. We noticed some suspicious masses which needed further care.
From first appointment setup through post-surgery and wound care, Friendship was fantastic! All staff members were personable, accommodating and genuinely seemed to desire the best for Tiberius (and us!)
Dr. Bolch did the first consultation and was gracious and professional. Tiberius is deaf and Dr Bolch, and each successive doctor, spoke in sweet voices even though they realized he couldn't hear.
Dr. Johnson came in for the pre-op and was just as courteous and compassionate. She explained every detail and was willing to spend any amount of time to ensure that we were fully informed. Throughout the surgery day, I was phoned several times--once when he was first anesthetized to tell me he was doing well, next shortly after the surgery to inform me that he came through effortlessly and later, following Tiberius' recovery, to fill me in on aftercare instructions.
Upon pickup, several members of the staff came to let me know how "Great" (pun intended) a dog Tiberius was and how much they enjoyed having him. One even thanked us for the experience, "I am so glad I was here to help", as she loved Danes.
The printed aftercare instructions were thorough and the staff went over them verbally as well.
The next morning, I again received a phone call to ascertain how Tiberius made it through the night and to ask if I had any concerns.
Overall, I paid $1600, including various medications and anesthetic, 3 lumpectomies, 3 biopsies, and various bandages and drains. Considering Tiberius' size (160 lbs), I consider the price worth the value.
I agree with the last reviewer (Dagny), DC pet owners should anticipate that sometimes emergency care is needed, and when it is, be expected to pay for it, regardless of the outcome.
I was extremely satisfied with Friendship and would recommend them enthusiastically!
***As an aside, while we were waiting for Tiberius, a triage dog patient arrived on a stretcher. The family, who were all visibly upset, were treated with tenderness and compassion. Every other owner waiting on dogs seemed to be moved to tears as well. The staff was reassuring to all and displayed the utmost in sensitivity and "humanity"!
The only reason I'm giving this...The only reason I'm giving this place 4/5 stars is because of their prices. The facility is really nice and clean. The staff are also very nice and professional. There is plenty of street parking (meters, of course) around and I think there's a parking garage underneath the facility. I've only lived in DC a year, so I hadn't seen a vet yet with my 6 year old, 6 lb. Yorkie Poo. The Vet was a sweetheart and very informative. Herself and her tech weren't too pushy to sell me stuff, which I appreciated since I'm a poor law student. I knew the bill would be expensive just because this is DC, but it came to $230!! That was just for an exam ($80!!), 2 shots, a heartworm test, and to have 2 nails clipped on her back paws ($30!!). Besides their outlandish prices, I would recommend this place.
I met with Dr. Boone and vet tech...I met with Dr. Boone and vet tech Sophia. Both were extremely friendly and thorough. Dr. Boone was great with my Yorkie. She was both professional and friendly. My Yorkie had a red spot on her eyeball. Dr. Boone wasn't sure what it was, but she performed multiple tasks trying to figure out what it was including a consultation with other doctors. She gave me some eyedrops and I meet with her again in 2 weeks.
The next morning I got a call from Sophia saying they had overcharged me. Silly me for not noticing that. I am very impressed and thankful that they caught that. They refunded my money right away!
My dog ate dcon, as I ran in all...My dog ate dcon, as I ran in all frantic they assured me this happens more often than I would think. They came out every ten minutes and gave me extensive step by step details, let me come back and check on him, and made sure I was comfortable after my state of panic. Everyone was so compassionate , and so generally concerned with my dog and 2 other dogs in the waiting room it was an amazing comfort. The price for the stomach pump, emetic and anti emetic, take home meds and visit was under 300 dollars. They took him right back and we were in and out in an hour. I am amazed and incredibly happy with my visit and would suggest this clinic for any animal needs !
Anyone who can complain for an emergency visit under $300 is CRAZY. most vet offices charge 200 to walk in the door, and under an emergency circumstance to have an end price of less than 300, with the kind, compassionate amazing staff there, i would have paid double.
My cat began vomiting bright red...My cat began vomiting bright red blood late Sunday night so I panicked and brought her to Friendship Hospital around 1 am. She was taken back to be inspected by a vet technician then returned to me. Although we were the only ones in the waiting room, we waited over an hour and a half for her to be seen by the veterinarian.
Finally, the vet came out and inspected my cat in a room and said she was vomiting blood from ingesting it after licking a bleeding mass near her anus. Dr. Gibbons squeezed my cat's sides and said her intestines also felt thickened, an indication of metastasized cancer. When I inquired if the mass could be benign, she stated that in this location, with cats, masses were typically malignant and this one would be difficult to remove due to its size, definitely requiring an expensive specialist. Side effects could include incontinence or a fistula. She stated oncologists would be an appropriate next step.
By now I was quite upset. She took the cat back for x-rays. When the x-rays returned, Dr, Gibbons stated that although she was not a trained radiologist, she also saw enlargement of one kidney and the same intestinal thickening. She stated they were being sent to a trained radiologist however and they would have the results for me in the morning - although I could have them in 30 minutes for an extra $50. By this point, I was exhausted and weepy and just wanted to go home.
The next morning, the Doctor then working called to inform me that all blood work and x-rays were completely normal. However, part of my bill, since I had arrived in the early hours of the morning, included a night stay at the hospital (which I later saw to be at least $250), so I made the decision to keep her there another day, at this point thinking I should prepare my apartment for cat hospice care. All in all, it was $795 for a day in the hospital, an exam, some x-rays, and 2 meds.
I decided to have the mass biopsied but due to prices, switched to a "regular" vet. Atlas Vet on H Street, NE was kind enough to squeeze me in the next day. Less than an hour after dropping her off, I got a call from the vet that they couldn't really locate the mass. More than likely it was an impacted anal gland which became infected and responded to the antibiotics. Initially thinking a biopsy would be necessary, they had charged a deposit for that procedure, but refunded my card since there was no longer anything there to biopsy. A much more personable office.
All in all, Friendship Hospital should NEVER have jumped the gun on diagnosing my cat with cancer without appropriate diagnostics. Nor should a vet who admits she is not trained to read x-rays make any diagnoses based on said x-rays. It was completely unprofessional and I will never return there - I have heard better things about the emergency vet in Alexandria, which I will hopefully never need, and in the meantime will continue to use Atlas Vet.
Not impressed at all with this...Not impressed at all with this vet. My male cat was exhibiting symptoms of a urinary tract infection and I was worried about how far it had progressed, so I decided to take him to the vet immediately. I have a regular vet out in Mclean that is wonderful, but because it was an emergency, I decided to take my cat to the nearest 24 hour vet as I wouldn't get there until after 5:00pm. I was seen by a doctor promptly and she took my cat back to extract a urine sample. She came back with him and said that his heart rate was normal, nothing appeared blocked but they would do a urinalysis to be sure. She said they would call within 24 hours to give me my results.
I didn't hear anything from them for a week but my cats symptoms cleared up so I let it slide. About 6 days after our visit, the symptoms resurfaced so I decided to cal land see why my results hadn't been given to me. I was told the doctor was in with another emergency patient and she would call me back. 4 hours later still no return call so I called back furious. After putting me on hold for about 5 minutes, she came on the phone to tell me he had crystals in his urine and that I should bring him in for x-rays. I told her I need a cost effective method because I don't have a lot of money and she was silent before carelessly responding that they can write him a prescription for a special diet. She seemed annoyed and made me feel bad that I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on tests. After reading reviews here, I'm glad I didn't submit to her request.
I am repulsed by the idea of a vet not providing test results in a timely manner, especially when there is something that needs to be taken care of. I've learned my lesson - I will never take my cat there again. From now on, we're schleping out to Mclean because we know we'll be getting quality, affordable and reliable care. Shame on you Friendship Hospital for Animals.
Anyone who is considering going...Anyone who is considering going to Friendship should read this article:
http://www.washingtoncit…They have a record with DCs veterinary board for having unlicensed veterinarians practicing there.
The owner of this hospital, Peter Glassman, testified against provisions of animal welfare bill in DC in 2007, saying he didn't think veterinarians should be liable for non-economic damages if a vet negligently kills a clients pet (that was one of the provisions of the bill -- to establish a right to damages if a vet negligently kills a pet. Hmmmm, why do you think he would be against that?).
In his online blog, he talks about running up business revenues. In his March 2007 blog, he talks about how veterinarians like to make an "easy buck" on the "gravy train" by marking up drugs to resell to clients.
If you want to see what priorities are driving his business, visit his blog:
http://dvm.typepad.com/p…As you will see, it's focus is "revenue models" and veterinary MARKETING, not clinical care quality.
Are the vets at Friendship under pressure to sell more services and get pets in and out as fast as possible to maximize profits??
Based on his priorities as evident from his blog and his testimony at the hearing last year, it seems the guiding philosophy of this place is MARKETING, and NOT being held accountable for quality of care.
I agree with the reviewer who said go to SouthPaws instead if you need ER care. They are in Fairfax VA, but worth the drive.
My boyfriend and I recently adopted...My boyfriend and I recently adopted a puppy from LDAR, and we were given a time limit on her spay. Seeing as how our normal vet quoted us about $400 for a simple spay procedure, we opted to take her to a spay and neuter clinic, trusting that they would do an efficient and affordable job and pup would be on her way to a speedy recovery.
We were wrong. After bringing her home from the clinic, we noticed a HOLE in her abdomen that was oozing. We could see the inside of her stomach. I felt horrible and given that our vet and the clinic were closed, we hurried our pup to Friendship around 10pm.
Our experience from then on was wonderful. They immediately took her into the back for triage, and a vet came out within twenty minutes to inform us of what was going on. Basically, our dog's incision had not been closed properly, and to ensure that the internal sutures were in place, she required an X-ray. They gave her a morphine shot, completed the X-rays, and when everything came back clear, they sewed her back up and gave her a good-fitting e-collar (the clinic had put one on that was huge).
Yes, it was expensive, costing us over $500 for the ER trip alone. However, having a dog comes with these unexpected costs, and we have insurance so the burden was lessened. I felt like my dog was in competent, caring hands the whole time, and my nerves were soothed by the staff, all of whom assured me our dog was going to be a-okay. I even got a chance to see other dogs that were staying overnight being walked - the staff treated them wonderfully and I know that this is the sort of place I'd trust to take the best care of my dog should we ever need a hospitalization (knock on wood).
So yes, it's pricey (especially after-hours), but the service was top notch, my dog was well taken care of, and we left there with all the information we needed to ensure a proper recovery. The pup is doing wonderful, and I'd recommend Friendship to anyone with an vet emergency.
I move a lot, and my two dogs have...I move a lot, and my two dogs have been to five different vets including three different emergency vets, and on both counts Friendship is the best around.
First, the ER. A friend of mine was watching my dog and his dog when one of them got into a large box of chocolate (his dog, as it turned out). We called the vet and let them know we were coming. When we got there a team of 8-10 people were waiting. The vets had both dogs on IVs and vomiting within minutes. People at the best ERs don't get that kind of service.
For regular checkups, I appreciate the bedside manner of the vets. They listen, they don't rush, you feel like you get your $80 worth.
My dog has received excellent care...My dog has received excellent care at Friendship and I have received excellent service. Dr. Bolch is great for regular visits. My dog was also spayed there and she came home just as happy and healthy as usual- her incision was already practically healed after less than 48 hours.
Yes, people have posted a bunch of horror stories but I'm sure you could find those kinds of stories for any animal hospital. Since animals can't tell us about their symptoms, we can't have the same expectations that we do for human care. Sometimes vets may have to do expensive tests to rule out possibilities and sometimes they may be wrong.
Yes, its pricey... but I'll pay...Yes, its pricey... but I'll pay top dollar if they're taking good care of my pup. I mean, someone has to pay for their beautiful facilities, right?
I recently took my puppy Lucy to get spayed here. I was hesitant after reading several posts here and talking to other dog owners at various parks in the District. Everyone agreed that Friendship is a great 24-hr option for emergencies, however many looked at me funny for even considering to use them for a planned surgery.
Well, Lucy and I are living proof that Friendship rocked the hizzy. The staff was informative, friendly, and treated Lucy with warm care -- one of the techs even offered to watch her whenever I go out of town! Her doctor was meticulous, friendly, and gorgeous -- yes, gorgeous! Bygones.
Needless to say, Lucy's spay went without complication and she's doing great! I will not hesitate to use FAH again in the future... and sincerely think its worth the extra buck. I highly recommend these folks to everyone.
I would give it 5 purely because...I would give it 5 purely because my puppy is alive at the moment. I'd give it 0 purely because the prices almost gave me a heart attack at my tender age.
Overall, I had a good experience with Friendship Animal Hospital but I do agree that the pricing is outrageous.
I'll make my experience brief:
My puppy was only 11 weeks old and started vomiting one evening. I called the hospital because it was the closest hospital and the ONLY hospital where taking a taxi in the middle of the night was an option (taking a taxi from dupont to fairfax seemed a bit too far at that time). They were very nice over the phone and suggested I monitor him and bring him in if he continued.
At 1:30 am I brought him in. The staff was nice- no complaints there. The doctor did seem incredibly young but I know that this doesn't mean an incompetent or inexperienced physician. She said that there was the possibility of my puppy having contracted the parvo virus and it did indeed come back mildly positive. They gave me an estimation up front and the option to treat him aggressively. They treated him, returned my phone calls promptly to update me on his progress and were very nice about answering my million questions. My puppy survived and is doing well
Overall, the bill came out to $1500 for two nights/days at the hospital which is incredibly outrageous since the estimation had been for 4 days for the same amount. However, I loved my puppy too much and I would have taken out a loan just to do everything in my power to keep him alive. I'd also just taken out puppy insurance so that helped with at least $900 dollars (thank you God). Its location is more convenient than other places so unless there is another 24 hour hospital nearby I'll have to bring him there again in case of an emergency. Lets hope this doesn't happen again!
Update: I read a few reviews elsewhere under the Union Vet clinic and it seems that they charge less for surgeries than my two night stay at Friendship. However, they are not an overnight clinic and I'd still head to Friendship Hospital if ever I need help with an overnight emergency.
As you probably know, animals like...As you probably know, animals like to become deathly ill only in the wee hours of the night and on weekends or holidays.
I'm adding to my old review - but the score stays the same (the old one is def worth a read too). They get two stars for....existing, and for having kept my animal alive when no one else was open to do it.
I just spent yet another weekend at Friendship Hospital, because things got bad too quickly to risk going further away to a better emergency vet.
I was there for 6 hours.
My pet was initially seen almost immediately (good, as he was nearing unconsciousness) and returned to me by a tech who said he was good to go - but that I should wait to see a vet to discuss a prescription.
About two hours later I finally was called back by the vet, who started filling out paperwork and got the cat out of the carrier before realizing she had the wrong animal (odd, since she called me back using my pet's name, which is by no means a common one). Back to the waiting room I went with barely an apology.
An hour after that I was seen by another vet, who was not at all aware of the fact that my pet had been seen by a tech already, or that I had been there for three hours, she seemed genuinely surprised.
She ended up assessing my animals' situation as far more serious than the tech had, probably correctly, and he ended up staying there in hospital overnight. Despite that, it still took another 2 hours to get him booked in - and an hour after that to get me an invoice (despite my questions to the front desk) so that I could leave.
At no point in this experience did I get the feeling that any of the vets or techs I saw cared about my animal or about my experience there.
They offer a much needed service, an emergency vet is absolutely needed and I'm glad they exist....
But Friendship Hospital is disorganized, chaotic, and oh my god overpriced - the staff are unfriendly (maybe just inexperienced and overworked, but does that excuse it?), and I'm not convinced my animal is getting adequate care if their vets don't even know how long he's been in the building waiting for their help.
Don't bring your animal here unless it is a true emergency and no one else is open (or maybe you…

Having just gone thru a 3-month...Having just gone thru a 3-month health crisis with my cat -- and being referred to a specialist at Friendship -- I have to say that I'm just NOT impressed with the quality of their care.
The front desk staff all seemed to be trainees who couldn't answer even basic questions, the actual vet staff seemed competent, but inaccessible, and the fees were astronomical -- over the course of three months I spent over $4,000 on three emergency visits, several rounds of tests, and multiple office visits.
After a particularly bad visit -- I had scheduled an appointment with the specialist and had specifically asked for some follow-up tests inorder to determine the progress of my cat's condition -- and then reminded both the scheduler AND his tech of this before hand AND when I dropped my cat off -- not only did the vet NOT do the tests, but he didn't seem to feel the need to discuss my cat's condition with me at ALL after treating her. I refused to leave until he talked to me and had to wait almost an hour before he came out. (And he wasn't in surgery -- I was told he was busy returning calls!)
So I dumped Friendship and tried South Paws in Fairfax, VA which was hardly convenient but they were very knowledgable about the condition, MUCH nicer, and much to my surprise the same procedures cost a third of what Friendship charged.
My recommendation -- go to your local vet for basic care, Friendship for Emergencies only (because it's open 24-hours,) and South Paws for Specialists.
I really want to give them 5 stars...I really want to give them 5 stars but due to the high prices I just wouldn't feel right.
So two years ago my puppy became very ill. I couldn't take her to our normal vet, CityPaws because they don't open on Wednesdays (and are the used car salesmen of vets in DC) so I go to Dupont Vet. Dupont is quick and their vets are very educated, my dog was diagnosed with parvo within the first 10 mins of being there, but not very caring. I was encouraged to put her down because her odds of survival were so low.
So we check out and head to Friendship and I don't have enough good things to say about this place. The vet was honest but optimistic about treating parvo. She told me it would cost a lot (and she was right!). They gave her lots of attention and kept me updated the whole week she was in there. Since parvo has a 50/50 chance I really feel like I owe Taco's life to all the employees there. And Iooking back 2 years later you don't even miss the money spent.
Dusty Bumbles (my cat) had her...Dusty Bumbles (my cat) had her first visit with FHFA tonight. She was suffering from congestion and a mild bloody nose. My appointment ran on time, the vet and staff were professional, friendly, and helpful. They faxed the record of her visit up to her "real" vet in Philly. (I'm only here for school.)
Overall, service was excellent. Prices were higher than I'd normally pay at home, but not by much. The total for the unroutine visit and meds came to $150. And I most likely would've paid around $100 up home.
I have yet to see if the diagnosis of a bacterial infection is correct, and I'll have to wait until my cat finishes her antibiotics. But the vet seemed very competent, friendly and caring. And she took the time to explain everything to me.
I took my dog, Ernesto, to FHA...I took my dog, Ernesto, to FHA around 2 a.m. on a Wednesday. Earlier in the evening he had gotten to a bag of dog food and treats I purchased for him eating more than any dog should ever eat at one time. (this was on top of his dinner that he ate just prior to getting in the bag.) When I came home to find the mess, he was clearly agitated--kind of like a kid who eats too much sugar--but seemed fine. I left him in the kitchen in case he had an accident and went to bed. I awoke to him whining and hacking like he had something caught in his throat. He looked scared and was obviously uncomfortable. I called Friendship and they suggested I bring him in immediately for fear he might be experiencing 'bloat" where his stomach gets twisted.
IWhen I arrived, he was taken immediately to the back and I was told to wait. About 15 minutes later, they came back to say they had x-rayed him and that he was obviously very full, but was not experiencing bloat. They wanted to keep him overnight and produced a "pre-bill" that outlined the estimated costs of the treatment he had already received plus what it would cost to leave him. It came to just under $700. ($300 of which had aleady been spent on his care so far.)
Long story short, they called the next day to say he was doing well but tha tthey wanted to keep him one more night to be sure he had evertying out of his system and had eaten no plastic that would harm him.
I picked him up the following morning and paid a bill that was $200 less than I was expecting. was it pricey? yes. Did i worry for a minute about my dog? No.
This is not a place for regular routine care. But as an emergency hospital, it fits the bill.
Took our dog in after she had hit...Took our dog in after she had hit her eye and it began to swell and stay closed. We are new to the area so I called up my vet from back home who recommended searching for an AAHA-certified hospital and getting it checked. Friendship came up in Google and I gave them a call.
The person who answered the phone was very nice and helpful. They let me know that they were open 24 hours and would see us whenever we could get there. They even took my information to set up a profile so it would be faster when we arrived.
The waiting area must have recently been remodeled -- it looks very nice and has plenty of space and seating area. There were 3-4 people at the front desk who were quick to help us check-in. Shortly thereafter, a tech came to take back our dog and check her vitals/weight/etc. He came up and met her and talked with us briefly before taking her back.
We only waited a few more minutes for the vet to bring us into one of their examination rooms - which also were clean and seemly recently remodeled.
At this point, our dog had won over the staff and she was a "celebrity in the back" according to the vet (Note: She had managed to whip herself in the eye with her own tail when she got excited I was home).
The vet looked at her and gave her plenty of treats -- made us feel very comfortable that they cared about her. We were told they would stain the eye to check for scratches (exactly what our vet at home had said they would do). Within a few more minutes, they brought her out and told us she was OK. Gave us a prescription for some eye drops to give her.
All in all, the process took about 30 minutes and ended up costing about $200 -- right around where I would expect for an emergency visit.
I had no issues with the staff, doctors, or facility. I understand people are picky when it comes to vets and animal hospitals, but we had a great experience at Friendship despite my fears when I checked Yelp.
"Friendship has been quite prolific..."Friendship has been quite prolific in racking up complaints," CityPaper noted a couple years ago
http://www.washingtoncit… Other yelp reviews aren't kind either. As for us, we spent over $300, and all we got was a dead cat :( That said, our experience wasn't as bad as I'd expected from Friendship's reputation.
The second my husband got home late Monday evening, he knew something was wrong: Usually Bartleby would run to meet us, then flop and roll around (like Roger Federer after a good match). But this time, our furry grey friend was nowhere to be seen. My husband went to the next room and discovered our poor cat moaning and wailing in pain.
Friendship is the only 24-hour vet hospital in DC. My husband rushed our cat there immediately.
To Friendship's credit, they hurried Bartleby to the treatment room right away, and gave pain medicine to make him more comfortable. Also, their vet diagnosed what was wrong very quickly: an aortic thromboembolism, and heart failure due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (a genetic condition that Bartleby's previous vet had missed).
Friendship's vet explained the situation twice: once to my husband, and again when I arrived 20 minutes later. When asked, she forthrightly answered that the aortic thromboembolism had happened several hours before (so our poor kitty had been suffering, alone in the apartment, for quite a while). She was also compassionate but direct about his prognosis (very bad). It was awful to hear, but this was the information we needed to make the difficult decision to euthanize him. We spent some time in a private room saying good-bye (the staff didn't rush us), and we held him through the final procedure. :(
Some days later, the vet sent us a nice sympathy card, calling Bartleby a "sweet kitty."
Our bill was over $300. Hey, we didn't exactly have cat insurance. I'd read the other yelp reviews and expected a much higher sum, to be honest.
I was putting off writing this...I was putting off writing this review because I recently lost my cat, and it was sad to remember. However, it's important to tell the Yelpers out there how great this vet has been to me and my family over 15 years, and especially over the past three or four. Dr. Kuehn has been very helpful, smart, and non-manipulative.
You can tell this vet is run smoothly. Yes, the prices are high. Very high. But it's convenient, and there are high-quality vets here.
Been coming here for years and...Been coming here for years and always had great service from caring customer friendly staff who love my beast almost as much as I love him. The service just gets better with each visit. Vets aren't cheap in general, but the prices are cheaper than I would expect for a 24 hour place in a nice neighborhood.
In my previous incarnation on Yelp, I wrote a much longer review detailing a problem I had once there. Since that visit, when I returned with the pup, I explained my old concern to the vet of the day, and they were very accomodating to my request to keep the dog with me while they did their thing. We also took in another stray pup for a short time over the holidays, and got her treated here before taking her home... They gave us a discount on her treatment because of the situation... and the treatment was appropriate and thorough. They do train newbies here, but the ones I've met were great. Also, the front desk staff is surprisingly attentive, letting you know they've seen you, and helping to carry dog food to the car.
Dorris' review scares me, because...Dorris' review scares me, because this is where I take my two cats. We are planning to spay one of them at this facility next month, so maybe we will reconsider.
We've been here twice with the cats, and have had an experience closer to Dorris' first take on the place. It's upscale, parking is easy, and the people were friendly. They weren't rough with my cats or anything, and didn't make us pay for anything unnecessary.
We bought "The Kitten Plan," which includes all of the shots for the first couple months, including worm prevention. I've had kittens before, and I think this stuff is pretty standard. It was only a few hundred dollars, too.
If you would ask my kitten though, he would say he hates this place. For some reason, since the day he was born he has hated dogs. Just seeing one makes him red with anger. He also doesn't like when people jam things down his throat. He's the size of a pea, but was so angry when getting his shots that it took three people to hold him still. I love him.
I'll start with the good. For the...I'll start with the good. For the most part, these guys are good for check-ups. Had two animals spayed here and those procedures went fine. Sadly, these graces are not enough to spare Friendship (what kind of definition of friendship do these guys use?!) Hospital.
Many months ago in November my dog suffered a wound to her chest (never found out how she got it). We took her to the hospital around 6PM and we were out by 7PM (she was taken in for surgery). I got a call at 5AM saying they were having problems with the operation (they left a message, I found that out around 8AM). She ended up dying.
Now, I know that the whole procedure did not take 9 hours (assuming they started at around 8PM, 7 to 8PM being preparation). Hell, if I'm not mistaken it was only supposed to take like an hour at most. Meaning that they took a VERY long time from receiving my dog to treating her, and she died because of it.
Not only that, but they had the nerve to still charge for the operation! I hate to put a price on life or something, but I cannot comprehend how they can justify charging around $400 for killing my dog. It's like paying for a hit on somebody. It's like a body shop taking your dented car, blowing it up, and then charging you for it.
This establishment should be shut down and if possible, the owners should be tried to the fullest extent of the law. Their negligence (as evidenced through this review and through many other's stories) puts them on nearly the same level as cold-blooded murderers. Avoid at all costs.
Our dog began having stomach-related...Our dog began having stomach-related issues on a Saturday night / Sunday early morning so we made the drive out to Friendship Hospital for Animals as it's open 24/7 (the vet we regularly see is not open 24/7). We were greeted by the receptionist and waited about 7-10 minutes as the receptionist was busy helping another customer. Once it was our turn, we gave the receptionist a rundown of the dog's symptoms and we completed the paperwork. Some minutes later, we were taken to an exam room and we saw a vet tech. He was helpful and listened, which was reassuring. But, this is where the feel god vibes stop. He informed us that the vet would be with us soon. So, we waited. And waited. We waited almost 90 minutes - yes 1 hour and a half - in the room without anyone stopping by to let us know what was happening. We waited in the room with the dog...and waited. Finally, we exited the room and signaled to the receptionist / employees that we were leaving. At this point, we had been at the facility for more than 2 hours (including check-in time) without seeing the vet. The receptionist came out and said, "What, you haven't been seen yet?!?"
I'm not the type to say "I'm never coming back again" because things can change and emergencies can (and probably will) arise in the future. I just wanted so share my experience in hopes that better communication and follow-through happens in the future.
Five stars for service!!!!! They...Five stars for service!!!!! They lose a star for price :/
I moved to DC in August with my kitty, Little Girl. LG has always been super skittish, hates men, and freaks out about the vet. She is six years old and has had....three vet visits? First health checkup, shots and deworming,....spay and claws,...allergy shots. So suffice it to say, she was not thrilled about the trip. But, she needed an update on shots and a micro chip, so on recommendation, I made the appointment.
Due to her skittish nature, LG's appointment was with Dr. Bolch. She was amazing. She was gentle, understanding and kind with the cat, answered all my questions about helping her through her new environment, and was wonderful with LG's fear. It is usually such a struggle to have kitty out and about when a stranger is in the room at all, but she let Dr. Bolch handle her in all kinds of uncomfortable ways and didn't even cry about any of the shots. I couldn't be happier with Dr. Bolch and her treatment of LG.
It was an expensive visit, and I knew it would be, but the $250 price tag hurt. But, they gave me a 10% discount for the construction going on, which was kind of awesome. They have since finished it, and from the outside in passing it looks amazing.
Plus, I guess I don't really mind the price so much when you do consider....they are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. That creates high operating costs. With the level of care and concern displayed here, I don't mind it all that much. :) especially knowing they will be there for me in an emergency at 2AM on Thanksgiving or something.
Everyone likes to think that their...Everyone likes to think that their vet/doctor/mechanic etc is the best in the world... While it is true that Friendship Hospital For Animals has some great vets & staff, my low star rating comes from the place as a whole in totality. There is a lot of turnover in the staff that matter: the techs (indicative of questionable management?); there is a whole category of staff that exists in part to deal w/ customer interface (read money); the facilities (the parts that was allowed to be seen by the customer) ok (scared to think about the parts only staff are allowed to see); the mark-up on drugs/products sold... I understand the increased costs of doing business in DC but I do not understand the decreased quality (inconsistency) of care. Not all of the vets are top notch... its a crapshoot if you're going at a random/emergency time or on a work-in basis.
I have seen scarier practices but I have definitely seen better. Perhaps it is too big of a facility to provide the utmost, continuous quality care? I don't know... probably not as I have had better experiences at University Veterinary medical facilities. I definitely have had better experiences at smaller practices. My current vet is a mobile vet whom I know frequently consults with specialists (for no additional charge) in managing one of my dogs who has endocrine issues.
I personally would only go there in an absolute emergency (and maybe even not then since my experience at SouthPaws was much better).
The only consistent positive thing I can say about its location... which is the least important factor for choosing care for my animals in a major city full of vets.
And yes, I held off on writing this review due to my disappointment w/ Friendship Hospital For Animals. So perhaps it's gotten better? Not so sure based on more recent reviews.
UPDATE: I decided to take my pups...UPDATE: I decided to take my pups to a new vet, so I needed to have my records transferred. I called 6 times over 3 days to request that they fax me the records. I never got them.
Finally I gave up and just took my dogs to Banfield (at PetSmart), where the records miraculously appeared 15 minutes after the receptionist called. (Oh--except they send one dog's records twice and forgot the other dog....But we'll save that for another day.)
I'll never go back to Friendship. Down to one measly star.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My pets are extremely important to me. I buy the expensive food and treats, I pay for grooming every once in a while, and I invest a LOT of time in making sure that they are happy.
Basically, I'm probably a lot like you.
Still, I cannot justify spending $250+ per dog every time I visit the vet! Once my Maltese was having stomach aches and related problems, so I took him in to the emergency room around midnight. I walked out two hours later, over $300 poorer, and all they really told me was he needed to go to the bathroom. Oh, and he needed to eat boiled chicken and rice for a couple of days--they could sell me some in case I didn't want to make it. Seriously?
I've never been back for an emergency, but I have gone for shots and checkups. I expected to spend a hundred dollars, maybe two. But FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS?
When it came time to get my dogs spayed/neutered, I took them to the humane society. It cost about $250 for two animals, plus nail trimming while they were under, no lick medicine, and pain medicaiton. I paid more than that for a couple of bortadella shots at Friendship.
Friendship Animal Hospital ought to be ashamed! It's no wonder that many people don't provide proper and timely wellness care for their pets! Who can afford that? And what kind of place that really cares about pets would want to make it impossible for the average person to afford?
