Ricochet is a dog that can surf. Originally trained to be a service dog, the golden retriever was not well-suited to the role as she kept rushing off to chase birds. Her owner Judy Fridono took her to a beach near her home in Del Mar, California, and Ricochet took to the waves. Instead of giving up on her, Judy focused on what she could do. They started on a body board in a paddling pool, and from that it went into surfing. Ricochet started boogie boarding at 8 weeks old and is now a pro on the surfboard. Because of her unique and highly skilled background of service/therapy/surf dog training, Ricochet is the only known dog in the world who surfs with disabled surfers and special needs kids for therapeutic purposes! She is able to counter-balance the surfboard to keep them from falling off too!
The inspirational YouTube video of her surfing went viral, after 42 days it had a million views. Now it is over 3 ½ million views…and increases daily! With this popularity she and Judy found a way of using her favorite sport to draw attention to important causes and use her board skills to raise money for a number of charities. She has raised more than $100,000 for human and animal causes alike.
All of Ricochet’s donations go through the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, Puppy Prodigies, to support rehabilitation programs for the disabled, autism foundations, and for canine cancer research.
Ricochet is also a finalist for the annual “Hero Dog Award” from the American Humane Association, where she is up against a guide dog and even a military dog, all amazing animals. Ricochet has a chance to win a $10,000 donation, which if she wins, will go for cancer detection!
