Two years ago, Shadow, a six-year old Labrador Retriever mix owned by Maurice Chaput developed problems with her right knee. Shadow required surgery to repair her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Her veterinarian recommended aquatic therapy twice a week to strengthen her knees. The Chaputs searched for a pool where Shadow could swim. The closest pool was an equestrian facility 60 miles from their home. After one trip, they decided to look into the possibility of building an aquatic therapy center.
Canine Fitness Center opened its doors in November 2002. The facility sits on 4.9 acres and is equipped with two indoor heated pools for swimming therapy and recreation. One of the pools is equipped with a 12 mph current machine. There is also a separate shower and drying area.
Originally, the Canine Fitness Center was going to be an aquatics center only. However, the Chaputs soon added a Jog-A-Dog motorized treadmill and a handcrafted mechanical treadmill by Paul Colby. Certified professionals provide massage therapy and acupuncture services. Full grooming services are available, as well as, Royal Canin nutritional products and Tahitian Noni supplements.
Shadow continues to strengthen her knees in the pools, while her companion, Casey, also a Labrador Retriever, enjoys swimming for fun and exercise.
