Human beings are recognizing the moral imperative to offer aid to the wild creatures that are harmed by our daily activities. Wildlife Rehabilitation is a relatively new profession that grew from our late-twentieth-century concern for the environment. As yet, there are no degree programs offered at the undergraduate or post-graduate level for wildlife rehabilitation. People from varied backgrounds who have gained their knowledge and skills from a variety of sources practice the profession. Rehabilitators combine medical and diagnostic skills with knowledge of animal behavior, animal husbandry, and species identification. Newcomers wishing to become involved in wildlife rehabilitation are seldom aware of the full range or knowledge and skills they will need to develop. By far, the easiest and most practical way to get started in wildlife rehabilitation it to volunteer at an established wildlife rehabilitation center. For more information about wildlife rehabilitation, visit the National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association website at www.nwrawildlife.org. Condensed from “Getting Started as a Wildlife Rehabilitator” in Wildlife Tracks, vol 6(1) Winter 2000 a publication of the Humane Society of the United States.
